My first instinct was to tell you to calibrate the screen but you said it doesn't work with the mouse as well. That puzzles me a bit.

Can you click anywhere in the program that is running to use it....to rule out a frozen or locked up program?

In the mean time, hit "alt", then "f" to open the file menu to close the program or right click on the taskbar button and select minimize/maximize or close. See if that helps.

Are you using the HP mouse or a different one?
