Greetings everyone...

I have a Touchsmart tx2-1020us which I've had for a few months now.  Since I bought it I've been messing around with it, and the latest tinkering is with Win7.

I am heading into the Navy, and will be looking forward to my first cruise coming sooner rather than later. As I was thinking of it, I was remembering that the bulk of my movie collection is on Blu-ray. I was doing some research and see that the internals of the tx2 are similar, if not exact, to other HP models that come with a Blu-ray player (minus the HD screen).

I am looking at replacing the factory DVD multiburner with a DVD burner/BD-ROM combo drive, such as the HL CT10L (same brand as what is in my tx2, lightscribe support, HP part from a dv7 laptop). While I'm aware of the fact that the laptop's LC won't support the full resolution of the movies, I am doing this (more or less) just to be able to play my movies when I'm not home.

Anyone done this before? Is this a good idea / practical option or will I be wasting my money on a part that will not work on my laptop?

Thanks in advance and cheers!

Alex

I'm sure you could swap the drive out and it would work but I'm not sure how the videos would scale to your screen. At least the drive should work with your laptop as long as the backplate matches up with the pins on the back of the drive.

Woohoo! I won my Touchsmart!

Thanks for the response, Dave. I wasn't sure how the videos themselves would scale on the screen, but my biggest worry was buying the drive and the system choking trying to handle the data... but doesn't seem to be much of an issue. The faceplate of the DVDRW swaps out easily, and the SATA backplate can be swapped from the DVDRW with the matter of a couple of screws.

I'll get around to buying/installing the drive in the next couple of weeks, I'll let everyone here know how it works out. If so, might be a tempting swap for others...

Let me know if that works for you. I would be interested in adding blue ray to mine. How much did the drive cost you?

Follow this link to get to the eBay auction I used. It cost exactly that much, and this is the same seller/part that I used. This is a DVDRW multiburner with BD-ROM and Lightscribe (and its a part being used by HP in its dv6 series) so I thought it would be a perfect fit for the laptop.

Swapped in the drive, loaded some "aquired" software for Blu-ray viewing and ripping and the drive worked like a charm!

Sadly though, as I put in another thread, I am selling this laptop as soon as my Dell Studio XPS 13 comes in on Friday, and put the computer back to its "factory" condition and already sold the Blu-ray drive.  Now the Dell needs a slot-load drive and some more disassembly, which I'll get around to one day...

I guess I didn't notice yours was a laptop... do you know if there is a drive that works in the IQ506?

Well first off, the GeForce 9300 in your model is perfectly capable of decoding and processing Blu-ray media, and doing it quite well in fact.
From what my research shows... the stock drive is a slot-load slim-line DVDRW... most likely a Hitachi/LG model as well, in SATA interface.

In my opinion, the model I linked above (click where I said "follow this link" to ebay) will be a direct fit into your model. It is a Hitachi-LG model, SATA, Made for HP, DVDRW with Blu-ray read, and Lightscribe (for those of us who still want that feature). And for the price, you can't find better for the dollar.

However it is done, just swap the drives, load appropriate Blu-ray software (Cyberlink's software is what I "acquired" through the usual channels), and enjoy! From what I have read, the GeForce 9300 mobile chipset (which is in your model) will be more than enough to get the job done with the new player, so there's nothing to sweat.

Oops... should try replying when my brain is actually functioning.

I said the drive in your Touchsmart is slot-load, yet I gave you the link for the tray-load that I bought before (duh!), instead of linking you to the one I was looking at for my Dell I just bought.

That link is (HERE). This is the best model I can find, unless you want something that can burn Blu-ray as well. But I was looking for read and not write, since I am hoping to build a desktop/HTPC rig with that once the price comes down on BD-RW drives.

Very nice! Thanks for the great information! I wish this computer had an HDMI output so I could use it with my projector :/ $130 bucks isn't to bad to add blue-ray!
