I have the RC running on an old HP laptop from 2000 with a 2.4GHz Pentium (single core was the only kind back then) and 1GB of RAM (all it'll take) and it works! 7 Looks great, and appears to be much leaner and less cumbersome than Vista, so I can't wait to upgrade my 506. Hesitant to run the RC on my shiny new machine, how did you do it? Partition the hard drive, and install it as a second OS, or install a drive in the pocket bay and put it there? Let me know, and if it's safe I'd like to try it.

Since Microsoft announced that final cut of Windows 7 would indeed be coming this October, and so far the general concensus on Windows new OS is very positive.

Dual booting. Pretty much a 50/50 split on my TS. The only thing holding me back is lack of touchsmart software support (well, it works but with great efforts).
I run Win7 RC almost exclusively on my TX2500 TabletPC.
Running Win7 exclusively on my 800mHz 2GB Samsung Q1U UMPC and it runs GREAT!
can you tell I like touchscreens!??!

Woohoo! I won my Touchsmart!
I would like to upgrade my Touchsmart to Windows 7, but I am hesitant to do so when these boards make it seem like my Touchsmart could go haywire at any time, and it's functioning perfectly now. I know there is a Windows 7 community here, and generally people have been able to get everything working, but the thought of trying makes me uneasy.
I would feel most comfortable upgrading if HP provided some kind of updated drivers or update guide. As an alternative, does anyone know if it would be possible to order recovery disks or just a driver recovery disk from HP once the Touchsmarts with Windows 7 preinstalled start coming out?
NOTHING has gone haywire on my TS while runnning Win7, in fact, it runs quite well. All the drivers work and like I said, with a bit of work, the touchsmart software works. Nextwindow has even released drivers for the TS touchscreen.
Is it ready for the general public? No, not until HP will make the TS software user installable for the general user. Everything else works great.
As for the touchsmart notebook - the TX2, the experience has been a bit difficult for some of them.

I don't mind not having the TS software suite. Are you saying that Windows 7 automatically detects/installs/carries over the hardware drivers, and I wouldn't have to hunt them all down and install them myself? I have heard of people having to do that for the touchscreen (the NextWindow drivers you mentioned), but is any other hardware affected? No need to describe in detail if it is already done somewhere else-- just point me in the right direction! :)
It detects most of the core drivers but I had to use winrar to extract the WLAN, Sound, Keyboard, and a couple others. Basically, you use winrar to extract the files that you download from the HP support site then run the setup files that are found in each of the "src" folders.
As for the touchscreen, the drivers are available for free from www.nextwindow.com . Go to the "support" tab and it will list what you can download. The HP Touchsmart is at the top of the list. The drivers are still listed as betas but work great.
As far as the whole process goes, go to the "groups" here on teh site and join the windows 7 group. Theres some great writeups about how we got things going. "Ehuna" who hasn't been on the site for a while did a great job of detailing how to get things working and someone else recently posted their version of how they did it.
One thing you may want to try is to get another hard drive and swap it out with your current one. do a HP factory restore to install the Vista version of the TS operating system and software then do a Win7 Upgrade over that. It makes things a bit easier in the long run and was my preferred way of doing it. Whenever you want or need to go back to the regular setup, you swap back to your first drive. During my "testing phase" I got the drive swap time down to less than 5 minutes. I may actually do a youtube vieo about the process. My reason for swapping drives was to keep a clean setup available in case things went wrong - which they did not. Now I have a dual boot setup using a single 1 TB drive with two partitions; on with the factory Vista setup and the other with my Win7 setup. I also purchased an external drive enclosure so my original drive now serves as my 750GB backup drive.
Good luck
David

Considering that 7 is a Windows product and the roll out has NEVER been very smooth (Remember 2000, ME, early XP and of course Vista), I think I'll wait a few years before I upgrade. I will probably wait for service pack 2. By then it should be somewhat stable.
I have the iQ526t. I did a complete backup of it to our Windows Home Server and then popped the Windows 7 RC in and did an in-place upgrade. Worked like a champ. Everything is working on it without issue. No warnings/alerts in Device Manager, the TS software is working fine. The onscreen displays for volume, etc. working great. I opened Media Center and checked everything there is working well. Overall, it was pretty much a non-issue. I put the disk in answered the preliminary questions and went to bed. When I got up this morning it was waiting for the product key, I entered it and about 5-10 minutes later it was ready for me to use. I've been on it all day today working with various apps and it's been working like a champ. It's also running faster and I'm already enjoying the new taskbar and other features.

The instructions here are also relevant to the tx2z, or any PC for that matter.

Woohoo! I won my Touchsmart!
I have an older IQ770 that I use in the Kitchen mainly to watch TV, minor Web surfing, check e-mail and most of the time simply displaying family photos via screen saver. Also as backup if main computer in study is in use.
My question is, should I consider upgrading to Win 7? Just because the gentleman with the IQ526 had no problems, will that apply to my older machine.
Also, is my older machine running the same software as the newer touchsmarts?
I went Win7 RC simply to get clearQAM cable HD channels, I still can't believe I'll have to use a box if/when I go to FIOS..

Pardon me while I channel Hannah Montana for a moment: "Yellow-haired-lady-with-glasses-Avatar - say WHAT?"
Yeah Diane, you lost me somewhere in there too.
Oh, and thanks GTG for steeling my line. I though I was the only one around here that could quote Hannah Montana?! Hrpmhhh. ;-)
