I am getting substantial static and noise though the speakers in my HP touchsmart.  They went away for awhile but it is back and incredibly annoying.  Can anyone help!

First, are you running old drivers? HP just released new soundmax drivers for the 800 series TS. If you have an 800 series, go to HP's downloads and drivers and update the driver. See if that helps.

Are you running the standard HP KB? I have had problems in the past with logitech keyboards making noise through my speakers.

I'll try to help you some more after you answer my two questions.

I am using the original HP keyboard. I went to the HP website and downloaded the soundmax drivers for my TS IQ504. Should I download drivers for the 800 series? THe sound is unbelievably annoying. It is not present at all when the computer is off. If I plug in headphones in there is still static coming through the speakers but music is playing though the headphones and the static is not playing though the headphones. Any help you can give is appreciated.

NO, I only mentioned the 800 series because that is the model I have and you did not mention whihc one you have. Although I do think they both use the same sound card.
To play it safe, stick with the HP Drivers for your particular model.

I have downloaded and installed new drivers twice and still no help. The static is worse than ever and intermitent. Volume and mute have no effect. Sometimes the static is very low and sometimes very loud. Again, I am very frustrated and not sure what to do next.

I am having the same problem, but the static happens when I am using the keyboard or downloading files. This is a real problem.

We had this problem on our HP Touchsmart 610 at work. The buzzy static noise seemed related to processor use -- it got more intense when doing things that required more processing, like downloading files. Tried a few things and nothing worked. Then we updated our Realtek audio driver and restarted, and it seems to have taken care of it. Fingers crossed...
