Hey everyone, MS has announced the introductory price of MS Windows 7 to early adopters at a bargain price of only $49.99 starting today, Friday, June 26, 2009, until July 11th, 2009. The Professional Version will sell for $99.99 during the limited time period.

The software will ship as an upgrade disk set on October 22, 2009, the official release date for Windows 7, but the limited time offer requires that customers pre-order, and therefore pre-pay for the operating system. The regular price will be in effect after that, $119.99 for Windows 7 Home Premium, not sure on the cost for the Home Basic, or if it is even offered as half-price, could be as low as $79.99, and Ultimate will go for $199.99. I'm not sure on the upgrade path, but I believe that WinXP users are S.O.L. on this deal, and maybe later on, MS will have the XP users covered on the upgrade map. After all, last check, PC magazine reported that 71% of all PC users were still using XP in some form.

So, for those of you who were betting the family car on the stability of the new OS, especially with the HP TS, here's your chance to get the zeroes and ones from the Messiah, and for a pretty darned reasonable price to boot. I remember paying something like that for MS DOS 6.22 back in the early 90's just to get floppy formats in one pass rather than 3 disk swaps, so it's pretty amazing how low they are gonna go, for what is a lot more code than what used to fit on 3 floppy disks back in 1993.

The story from Reuters is here:

I just thought our members would be interested in such a great deal in these tightwadded times. I just hope that by this time next year, we all still think we got such a great deal.

This is not out of the goodness of their hearts. Apple announced the new price on the newest OS10 Snow Leopard. The complete os costs is $29.95 which is a heck of a price. MS is just realizing that the days of high priced operating systems is over. I am willing to bet that the advertising after 10/22/09 will be something along the line of "We have had so much demand for Windows 7 that we are announcing a permanent price reduction starting at $49.99.

Here's the direct link to the web page where MS is doing the deal if you want to go straight to it...

Yeah, but how many are going to buy an Apple OS to try on their PC? That will be an Apple users only upgrade for the most part, too many apps would have to be shelved for it to offset the price for a trans-system upgrade to be cost-effective. Talk about software compatibility problems? You think you have them with Vista 64 now? I realize that this is probably an OSX upgrade, so it doesn't allow anyone to format C:\ and load Snow Leopard on an empty drive or even a dual boot setup, just as Win7 is an upgrade, and you must have Vista on the drive before you up to Win7.
Anyway, I'm as skeptical of MS as you are, and what better way to get people to buy who were sitting on the fence than to slash the price? Even I may consider buying a couple of copies to stash away for a rainy day when SP1 or 2 is released.

I pre-ordered Windows 7 Home Premium, but debated a few minutes about getting Windows 7 Professional because of the "Windows XP Mode." I couldn't imagine that not getting Professional means you can no longer run any old programs-- Windows XP Mode just sounded like absolutely guaranteeing you can run Windows XP programs by, well, running them in Windows XP. Can anyone shed light on this?

I refuse to do it! First, I won't until I know HP will provide full support for the TS after the upgrade as well as an updated TS software that is fully functional in Win7.

Second, I refuse to pay M$'s pricing game for a long overdue fix for a crappy operating system that was all wrong in the first place.

Yes, I've been beta testing since the beginning, but this really makes me mad. Why should I have to shell out the cash now and wait several months?

Ugh....I needed to vent.

I am having trouble understanding your post-- you have been enjoying the Windows 7 RC, it works flawlessly on your machine, and you find it a vast improvement over Vista, but you are upset that Microsoft is offering it for purchase at only $50-$100 dollars? Are you upset because you feel that Microsoft should give all Vista users a free upgrade, not just people who buy from now until Windows 7 release? I would prefer this as well, but they do have a business to run, despite the mistakes they've made in the past.

Also, I think you are misinformed about the preorder system-- you can preorder Windows 7 from many retailers, including Best Buy, Amazon, Target, etc., but your card/method of payment will not be charged until the product ships. If you do change your mind, I recommed preordering from Amazon--they offer free shipping on this particular purchase.

Was a bad day. Spent over 800.00 on my dog who was just diagnosed with pancreatitis and diabetes.

Yes, I do like win 7 a lot and use it much more than Vista but I was hoping...and thought I had read that it would be 49.99 period.

I will more than likely get it for my tablet PC (tx2500) but will probably not for my Touchsmart. Before I commit to it, I want full confirmation that it will work with my touchsmart software. I doubt that will happen before the 49.99 period runs out.

Rose, I agree with you, and reserved a copy of pro for myself. I'm not sure how it does it, but I'll bet the farm it's emulated, as re-booting into an XP environment would mean a lot more tech support calls when the dual boot fails. Just guessing, though, and I'm sure as time goes on, we will find out more about what we just plunked 100 bucks down for. We're not even sure of the October 22 release date, so it may not be until December or so when MS actually ships the disks, so we have a lot of time to ponder.

David, sounds like you did have a bad day, but don't fret, you can always install it to a cloned from the TS drive and try it out before you commit to it. If it doesn't work out in the first 30 days, don't register with MS, and sell it on ebay.

Really, so far, not having had vista, 32 or 64 bit on any of the machines here until this TS PC, I haven't really had the rash of problems that I expected to have with Vista. (and I have 4 kids and a wife, each with their own, plus 3 laptops, all running XP) My customers who have Vista seem to have fewer problems that require a re-install, but I realize that 70% of the US still runs XP vs Vista, so the stats are skewed because of it. I really don't like how I am blocked from seeing some of my files within Windows Explorer due to parent/child permission hierarchy, especially when I want to convert a Flash .flv file from my Temp Internet directory. I'd like to be able to log my wife off before I log on from the Win Logon screen, and I'm not liking the way the All Programs menu works in stock form, but I'm pretty stable, and that counts for a lot.

I've been running it daily and really like it. I just couldn't get the TS software to to fully run in it.  Even tried Vista mode with some success.

I was mainly hoping the regular price would be 49.99.  My guess is that they would profit considerably even from that.

What mainly did you have trouble with getting to run in Win7? Long list?
Dave

June 27, 2009 10:46 PM

If I do an upgrade from Vista and make them run in Vista compatability, everything works fine roughly 90%.

Installing from a clean install of Win7, you have to use winrar to extractt eh files and run the installers in the src folders. Easy for me and you but for the average user, its gonna cause some problems. I would like to see HP come out with an installer that will work naitively in win7. If not, we're gonna be answering a lot of questions...

Still, the major disappointment is the price. I can't afford to do the special price righ t now and when I will be able to afford it, the offer will be over. I also wish MS would ahve done a "coupon" for registered beta testers. I have three computers (mu TS, Tablet and UMPC) that have all been hapilly running Win7, especially my UMPC, but they will have to wait.

I assume you looked closely at the link I mentioned above.

OK, it says between June26 and Jan 2010...

"

Consumer Desktops

All new HP Pavilion, HP TouchSmart and Compaq Presario Desktop PCs sold between June 26, 2009 and January 31, 2010 with an eligible operating system -- Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Ultimate, or Windows Vista Business -- are eligible for the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program from HP.

The majority of refurbished HP Pavilion, HP TouchSmart and Compaq Presario Desktop PCs sold during this period with an eligible operating system are also eligible for the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program from HP, although some older refurbished models are not eligible.  To determine whether your refurbished HP desktop PC is eligible, please click Order/Check Status and the ordering site will inform you of your eligbility."

So I can assume that HP will be releasing an installer package for the drivers and ALL the Touchsmart software that allows CURRENT Touchsmart owners to do the upgrade without any problems.  Bu current, I mean anyone who purchsed before June 26.

My reason for being so persistant about this besides the fact that it affets me is the multitude of problems/quesstions that we will be getting here once Oct 22 comes around.

I purchased one copy and will probably use it on my tablet PC becasue of the big advancement in tablet features.

One thing I didn't consider (a lots been on my mind lately) iks that the RC does not expire until the end of Q1 2010, so as far as my TS is concerned, When HP rolls out updates and such, I'll have time to decide if it will be worth springing for the full priced upgrade or not...and saving up the $$ for it. ;-)

NewEgg sold out of the Win7 Pro version already, and is awaiting another shipment of Home Premium, so the 1/2 Off Sale is producing big results for the coffers of the MS Corporate Account. Maybe they will learn from this that people will be happy to pay reasonable prices for software if they'd just drop the price. Nah!
Dave

June 28, 2009 10:52 PM

In light of the wild response from customers over the Half-Off Sale for Windows 7, the NewEgg Mall will be holding a similar sale in memorial of the King of Pop on boy's trousers, which will also be half off, just the way Jocko liked them.
Sorry, I just couldn't hold it in any longer...
