I've read many reviews on the tx2z & I've heard many good things & some of the bad things.

The main things I'm interested in are:
- Does it really get THAT hot? If so, what helps?
- Is the screen overly glossy & grainy?
- Is the screen that flimsy & frail?

They're the basic & most common problems. Are there any others?

PS: I am not a gamer, so that's not a problem.

First, Its really not that bad. Part of the problem is that it was a tablet pc marketed as an entertainment PC, the general public just hadn't grasped the concept of tablet PC's as opposed to the business community.
It's packed with lots of very good features such as the active digitizer (pen) and the multitouch (finger) digitizer, which are at present only available in one other tablet, the very similar Dell XT.
There have been some problems with driver issues based on the touch digitizer from n-trig and n-trig has been slow to respond.
It has however, recieved accolades from the majority of the technology community and was rated very high by several publications in their reviews and was also picked as "TabletPC of the Year".
The screen issue is a matter of preference. Tablet PC's generally have grainy screens which makes them useable in most lighting conditions and cuts down on finger and palm prints. Most multimedia PC's use te more glossy "Brightview" screens which make watching movies a better experience. However, some got one type of screen while others got the other type of screen and that caused some unhappiness.
Fan noise also seems to be an issue but I have owned many tablets (more than 7) and its fan noise from what I have heard is average. I compare it to my very quiet Fujitsu and my very loud Gateway CX. My TX2500 (same platform, differnt digitizer) performs quite well and runs both Windows Vista and Windows7 very nicely.
Build quality is about what you would get form a consumer grade laptop. The plastic is a bit different than the business class and I'm sure it wouldn't survive a drop like a business class machine would. But quality and feel are good. I really like the keyboard a lot too and the touchpad is by far the best I've ever used.

If you are looking to get one, they are coming way down in price. I got an email today from ecost.com that had a nicely equipped one for 667.00. Thats about what I paid for my single touch TX2500.

as for your specific questions.

The laptop does get rather hot, but not a lot more than most laptops. (macbook ect.)

The screen looks at first like it's damp, but I stopped noticing it really quickly and it doesn't bother me. I also have no problems using it outside on a sunny day so the screen is pretty good.

my main problems with it are...

many of the drivers are just unavailable or very tricky to get.

the "multi-touch" capability is a joke. there are 3 gestures that you can do with this. zoom in-out and rotate a picture. Thats it. nothing else don't get the idea that you can run multi-touch software at all.

The preloaded software is slow and filled to the brim with bloatware, and you must pay for a physical recovery disk. $15

and for me this computer will not just simply work. every day i have frustrating problems. today the USB ports have quit working and the trackpad scroller has been unresponsive for about a week. programs (including windows explorer) freeze on a regular basis. and i have had to re-install windows 5 times on this machine. I have owned it for 3 months.

the battery (4-cell) lasts about 2 hours, and takes atleast 4 hours to fully charge. therefore it is best used plugged in.

As a laptop and a tablet it's decent. if i had the choice again i would have bought a different laptop.

Okay, so I am currently using a Toshiba Satellite A200 & I would like to know what it's like in comparison. ie: Heat, fan noise, does it do much damage if you drop it?

I'm also intending to run Ubuntu Linux on it. Either as the only OS or dual-boot with Windows 7 (once it comes out). I'll mainly be using Adobe Flash, assorted audio software (like Audacity) & probably with some other software.

Also, what are your experiences with Windows 7 (if you've used it) & also with Ubuntu Linux (if you've used that aswell)

I'll probably be intending to get the tx2z around October.

Oh, forgot something. How about the sound? The sound in my current laptop is extremely good when compared to other laptops I've used.

Also, battery life isn't much of a problem, my current laptop when using Vista (I HATE vista) lasted around 2.5 hours, & now using linux, it lasts 1 hour & 40 mins, so that's not a problem either.

Do what I am planning then.

Get a 120 or 250 GB OCZ Vertex ( the ONLY good SSDs out there at the moment.....the G.Skill Falcons are decent as well ) Solid State Drive. Sure you will lose some space but you will be getting MUCH faster performance and MORE battery life and LESS heat.

Altec Lansing Speakers are tops when it comes to laptops.

That is a good idea, I'll look into that.

I am quite happy with the Touchsmart.  I have one of the tx2110's and liked it so much I bought the Touchsmart tx2z.  HP had an advert for $300 off, and my son's employer was bought by HP so now he is an HP employee, so I used his EPP discount.

The sound is quite good on these tablets, as someone else mentioned, Altec Lansing rocks.  As for battery, I get about 3 to 3.5 hours on the 8 cell battery with power setting on saver and the screen dimmed.

I've been running 64 bit Windows 7 RC since I got it.  Multi-touch, while a nice concept, is a bit flakey at best with the current n-trig drivers.  The pen functions are great, and writing on the screen is quite easy.  Handwriting recognition works well.

I do strongly recommend using some type of screen protector.  On my tx2110, there is some minor scratching in the middle areas of the screen where I did most of the writing and clicking.

Yes, these back corner of this laptop does get quite warm.  Too hot to comfortably use in my lap for an extended period without some type of laptop table or something under it.

Hope this information helps.

Just received my tx2z two weeks ago. So far i love it, it is an amazing and beautiful machine. It gets hot but not extremely hot. I've owned a Toshiba for like 4-5 years (don't remember)and that machine got hot. The screen for the tx2z is not grainy or glossy. I believe mine is a matte and it looks fine to me. I had purchased an anti-glare photodon screen protector for it and you can't even tell it's on the screen! I'm running 64 bit, 4gb, RM-84, 320 GB, 8-cell battery. The only thing that kind of bugs me is the battery life. It's not superb. Maybe because with my blackberry I don't need to charge it for like two days and the battery is still great from running all kinds of apps and surfing the web. With my tx2z pen or touch input response does not lag. I'm really happy with this purchase, I had only spend about $850 from two coupons (15% and then 10% off) for the laptop.. maybe less, because I had got laptop case, and extra ac-adapter.

Thanks for the info guys. According to the HP store right now it's $799 (Australian), So I'll see if I can get that. I tried using the Live Assistance thing on the HP site to see if I can get it without any OS on the hard drive, & I have been told that the only way I can do that is through ordering over the phone. So I'll do that.

About the heat. My current laptop now (idle) is 30 degrees celcius (86 farenheit) under the battery (fan is not running, so I can't check that). How hot does it get at the fan on the tx2z?

Out of the box, my TX2-1270us was pretty disappointing. Luckily, I installed windows 7... now it rocks my socks.

It's the HP bloatware. It's horrible. I'm still debating if I want to install the touchsmart software, I'm pretty happy with the windows 7 install. I've had mine for almost a week and I love it! Currently, I'm trying to find an elegant way to play mkv files in MCE. It's a trivial issue and I'll probably resolve it once I get home.

HP must've been smoking some amazing crack when they decided to load up the Tx2 with all that bloatware!

Have to agree with Draiko with windows 7 it runns indeed smooth like a baby. Well it does go hot at times but not that you can cook a egg on it. I am pretty happy with the tx2. The screen is a bit grainy but not annoyingly. HD videos look nice. Viewing angles are a bit compromised and outdoors it can become hard to view, especialy in sunny days.

When I'm in a lecture university and don't want the fan to make noise I switch to a energy plan that sets minimum prozessor energy at 2% and maximum prozessor energy at 20%.
While it makes the system slower it also removes the noise.

When I do something that needs performance I just switch back.

What is a prozessor? You mean processor. Lol

Ohhhh he made a mistake. How funny. Become a man kid. By the way in German a processor is called a "Prozessor".

Runs cool, quiet, and smooth in Kubuntu Karmic. Screw Windows. It takes a little fiddling to get the touchscreen working in Linux, but the end result is worth it. Forget about non-support of pressure sensitivity on the stylus in Windows, it works brilliantly in Linux in all apps (Gimp, Photoshop via wine, etc).

Okay so it has not even been a year since I've got my tx2z!!! AND... NOW... i am sending the freaking thing back to get the hard drive and motherboard replaced. :( I don't do anything on the computer besides browsing the web, and typing up papers for school. Don't even have programs besides Microsoft Word and Powerpoint! Pretty sad that my computer just died will not turn on (I slide the power button, and all the lights flash on then off immediately while the screen stays black the whole time). I have to sit there for a long time trying everything possible and sometimes with luck it would start up normally. It takes forever (days) to shut down too! I spent two hours on the phone with HP support (horrible just want to cry!!!) for the second time in (not even) a year. TX2Z definitely got problems.

KINDA WISHED I LISTENED WHEN EVERYONE WAS COMPLAINING ABOUT "ALL THE TX MODELS"................
