One day my calendars were all happily syncing, the next they were not.

Here is a fix courtesy of GeektieGuy:

1) Navigate the %LOCALAPPDATA%\TouchSmartData\Data, i.e. C:\Users\\AppData\Local\TouchSmartData\Data.

2) Delete (or rename [I recommend rename]) the folder named "XML"

3) Launch SmartCenter

4) Launch TouchSmart Calendar

5) Reconfigure the Calendar sync

Calendar should regenerate the data files.

*******************************

In my case it worked perfectly.

In combination with the google/touchsmart/PPC/Iphone, I can sync all my calendars!  I use a program called syncmycal to sync the other programs (Outlook, PPC, Iphone).

dave- nothing works. I have tried everything. I am extremely advanced with computers and it just seems like the overall functionality is "broken by design". none of the xml files seem to have correct data in order to access gmail calendars. This is quite odd since google freely makes available a private xml URL from within a google calendar account. I have sync set up with iphone / google calendars fine, but my 600xt 1055 has no love. maybe you can post the contents of your xml files?

Kurt,
Do you have IMAP turned on in your gmail account?

Also, go into your gmail calendar settings and click on the calendar tab. It will (hopefully) show a list of calendars. There chould be check boxes checked next to the "HP Touchsmart" calendar for show in list.

Another thing I remember reading is that either the TS calendar app or gmail has trouble handling special characters such as #. $. %. & in the passwords. If you are using any special characters, try temporarily changing your gmail calendar password to something simple with just letters and numbers. See if that works. If it does, pick a stronger password, just without the special characters.

I just checked my calendars in gmail and noticed that I have several "Touchsmart calendars", presumably form each time I reloaded windows on my TS ad set my calendar up again.

nah- the touchsmart app does not create any calendar objects in the gmail account. Probably due to outdated code in the HP app. The only way I got it to work was to rename my current gmail calendar to "HP Touchsmart Calendar". Then it worked fine. I could also create an additional new calendar of same name, that works too, but then I end up with the touchsmart calendar not seeing things from the primary gmail account calendar (by default named as user@gmail.com). I hate to say it, but this is very notchy programming on HPs part. The average home user will never figure this out, and it does not 'work out of the box'.

btw, IMAP is on, and no symbol chars in the password. however if this is the case HP should fix their code to allow use of symbols in the password. That is quite common.

for newbies: go into your gmail account > calendar. click settings for your calendar. change the name of the calendar from "yourname@gmail.com" to "HP TouchSmart Calendar" - without the quotes of course, and the capital letters must be exactly as shown: HP TouchSmart Calendar

Now, open the touchsmart calendar settings in the touchsmart app, select google and set your login info. That's it.

I only wish there was a way to set *when* the touchsmart calendar syncs.. e.g 15 mins, 30 mins, etc- you have to maximize the calendar view and click "Sync Now" manually. Lame.

I think the calendar syncs every 5 minutes or so. There is a background process that does this for you. You don't have to push Sync Now.

December 28, 2009 2:37 PM

thanks- can you verify that / let me know the process name? i'm not seeing mine update automatically.

would have been ideal if HP used the new (well not so new...) Google push API and m.google.com server address. http://www.google.com/mobile/products/sync.html#p=apple
There is also a downloadable sync client for PCs that works with most installed email clients, and this could come pre-bundled / installed with the touchsmart app to connect the calendar. All you would need to enter in settings would be your gmail user / pass. no fuss, no muss.

It's a Service, but I'm not sure I remember the exact name. Something like CalendarSyncService, I believe.

I'm not sure which Google API's are used by the calendar app, but I'm sure they are the ones Google has published. In fact, I think the calendar app bundles some of the libraries that Google itself produces for syncing purposes. It sounds like you may be able to confirm that, judging from the knowledge you've already shown.

Thanks- I'll see what I can find. HP support has been unable to offer any info.

Question, not related- Do you happen to know a way to keep the touchsmart UI maximized after resuming from sleep mode? Resuming from sleep always forces the touchsmart UI to minimized. makes it kind of hard to set this thing up as an "entertainment appliance" for the family..

It could be that when entering sleep mode, Windows turns off Aero briefly. When that happens, the TouchSmart UI minimizes because it needs Aero features to work properly. It may be that you can change the setting for requiring a login after resuming and that will prevent Aero from being turned off.

December 29, 2009 2:27 PM

bummer- While I love the 600 and the new TS UI, it is glitches like this that will unfortunately keep it firmly in the "novelty" class and never quite make it to prime time. Not that it is HPs fault, it could very well me MS's fault by not providing additional hooks to do things like auto-re-maximize apps that depend on Aero. However, I also wonder if anyone in product dev at HP actually took one of these home to use it like an average consumer during the development process (e.g. real-world usability testing).

December 29, 2009 2:29 PM

oh btw i do not have the setting turned on for requiring login on resume- this is more of an appliance than a pc as far as my use is concerned. In comparison, imagine how miffed folks would be if they "resumed" their DirecTV box and the UI was minimized? LOL

Thanks guys for all of your posts. I had been following the posts trying to sync my touchsmart with google with no success....UNTIL the post noting that the caps must be exactly HP TouchSmart Calendar. I didn't have the capital S. Once I did that it worked great. Thanks again!

I have confirmed this as a bug with the TouchSmart UI and not Aero / Windows7. Windows Media Center UI resumes from sleep just fine in the state last left in, e.g maximized, and on the last function used.  This means there are hooks available to do this, it just seems the TS UI developers overlooked it.

The TS UI program was obviously not designed to handle event triggers. Coding in an argument to maximize the UI on resume using the Win32_PowerManagementEvent trigger would have been a novel idea. This is standard stuff. Even Itunes makes use of this and restores window on resume.

Again, it is things like this that lead me to believe no one at HP ever really uses what they sell to the public.
