Hi all,

Ive had a touch smart IQ770 for 2 yrs now and the other day the screen froze and I had to turn power off to restart. It restarted fine and after  2hrs use turned it off and went to bed.

The next day I turned it on, the power button lit up the fans spun but I was left with a black screen and no start up. I left it for a good 10 minutes to hear for any windows start up noises but nothing.

I hard reset it again and the same thing happened, black screen and no start up not even being able to go into BIOS, after 10 attempts of powering on and off it eventually booted up and woked fine but when turned off it then took another 10 to 20 attempts of powering on and off before booting up. This is becoming really fustrating and fear one day it will never start again.

Any help please before it is stripped down and sold on ebay as scrap.

It sounds like the same disease that everyone who posts about an IQ770 writes in about. The 1-1/2 year to 2 year dead screen syndrome seems to have taken another victim. I wonder if HP has seen a trend with this as well. It could be that your CCFL lamp inverter card has died, or the CCFL or fluorescent tube that back lights the lcd panel has gone bad. It could also be the video card or the capacitors on the power side of the motherboard, since you mention that the computer never actually boots far enough to make sounds. I assume that your config within Windows is without a logon screen, so it just boots into a single user profile and plays the Windows Start .wav file. Got any other observations that might be clues to help us troubleshoot?

I'm not sure if this one is a display issue Dave. My guess is a bad Hard drive or RAM.

As for the display issues, a bad inverter or CCFL would result in no display - unless you shine a flashlight on it.

The vertical lines issue IMO is either a bad cable or bad display adapter.

Just a hunch.

Good to hear from you again. :-)

Yeah, I've been landscaping around the pool in my back yard, and the weather is kicking my @$$, between hot and humid and storms, I'm working in ankle deep mud half the time. We've been in an eleven year drought since I moved out here to the property, so it's like: what is this? A rice paddy now?
Anyway, I assume that nick1234 has not shined a light on the screen yet to see if there are shadows of a desktop hiding in the darkness, but if he has, let's try that, good point, David. Glad to be back.
I've also grown quite an addiction to the game "Bioshock", which reminds me of "System Shock", and "SS2". This, and my back yard project have been taking up all of my extra time. Looks like a "StayCation" is in my future as well, my 15 y/o daughter is having a kidney removed, and the soonest we could get her in is next week when the trip to the greatest roller coasters in America was scheduled. We'll maybe be able to re-schedule for early fall, the weather will probably be better anyway.
Shine the light, Nick...

Hi all thanks for your replys.

I have shone a light on screen but nothing there, I have also hooked it up to another monitor but to no avale.

It has gradually got worse to the point it wont boot into bios or anything now, all it will do is turn on and the fans sit and wur away. Just to point out other observations it some times will power on and the fans get excited to the point it sounds like it is going to take off, other times the fans sound normal.

if i touch the screen it will make the beeping noises. It was set up to go straight into windows so would expect even if the screen was shafted to hear the windows log in sounds. It would when it was working freeze up which required a hard reset.

Hope this helps a bit, Nick.

I had this problem with a refurbished 770 bought on ubid refurbed by HP. It had that no startup and black screen after an hour or so problem out of the box. I sent it back to them under warranty and they said they replaced the power supply and video card. Sent it back to me and its worked ever since (about a year and a half). Sounds like a similar issue good luck with a fix.

What do they say when you call them and ask? it won't be free, but they do offer paid repairs in many cases.

Hi Diane thank you for message they say it can't be fixed but buy a new one.I have a problem with this as companies seem to make products that it doesn't matter how much they cost but once out of warranty just bin it and get another one.I will not so I have took it back to PC World Aintree uk this morning and now they should sort it now as I have give up on it.X Jim

Replace the c-mos battery and if that doesn't do it try moving the display cable to ev2 on the motherboard
