Hi fellas,

New member here, so hello to allSmile

I've really been enjoying my new IQ522 for the past few weeks, however today I came across a small problem.

I want to record 'what U hear' i.e. record anything going through the soundcard and I do not have this option available like I did on my old HP laptop (used to also be called stereo mixer too I think).

I've read that Vista can hide this option and have tried the instructions to right click and select 'show disabled devices' in the sound control panel, but even when I do this, no other devices/options appear apart from microphone array and line-in.

Does anyone know how to enable this with the touchsmart or is this something the touchsmart soundcard cannot do?

Cheers

 Jim

Sorry I haven't responded yet. I'll be booting my machine back into Vista - been doing some Win7 testing - and will try to answer your question later tonight.

OK Jim, lets see if this helps.

First, click on start > Control Panel > and then the "sound" icon to open the sound properties box.
Click on the "recording" tab.
"Microphone array" should be checked. If not, click on it and then click the button that says "set as default".
Click again on the "microphone array" and click the properties button. Make sure that next to the "device usage" on the general tab that "use this device" is selected.

Click on the levels tab. I have mine set at 50%

Click on the "microphone enhancements" tab. I have mine set to "Voice Enhancements".

Click on the "advanced" tab. Mine is set to 2 channel, 16bit DVD Quality.

Click OK or apply (if you made any changes).

Back in the control panel, click on the "Soundmax" icon.
For "Playback Devices", make sure that "microphone array" is chosen as the default recording device.

I hope I understood correctly what you were trying to do.

If you are just trying to make recordings, you can also try the free and featur rich recording program called "Audacity".

Hi David,

I'm having no trouble being able to record with the in-built microphone. All my settings are as you suggested.
The problem I have is being able to record whatever is going through the soundcard (such as the audio from a youtube clip for example).
On my old HP laptop I had an a microphone option, a line-in option and stereo mixer/'What u hear'. By selecting the stereo mixer/'What u hear' as the recording source you can record direct (as opposed to recording whatever comes through the mic).
Hope that was understandable.

OK, that was my second guess.
I had looked through the settings while I was in the application and didn't find anything that would indicate that that could be done.

It sounds like you are trying to record an audio stream as it is being played over your computer. I'm not sure if that feature is availabel anymore since the recording industry became so tight about ripping music. In their eyes, being able to record streaming audio woudl be akin to illegaly copying music. My guess is that this feature is no longer available for such reason.

I'll dig into a bit more to see if I can give you a more definite answer.

Ah, that makes sense.  I actually downloaded that free sound recorder program a few days ago in the hope that it may give me the option but the only sources available in it's dropdown menu was mic or line-in.

Oh well, at least I've just got the TV working by getting a cheap powered indoor ariel and managed to record a few TV programs.  Now I just have to get to grips with messing around with DVR-MS files.

 Thanks for your help David,

 Cheers,

 Jim

No -- This appears to be a hardware lock specific to TouchSmarts....

Other Vista machines can allow recording of soundcard / streams using the method Jim described in the original post. And I use Audacity for that purpose also.

This is an HP TouchSmart lockout.............

So would the soundcard actually have the functionality but it has somehow been disabled, or does it not have the capability at all?

August 8, 2009 10:57 AM

I don't know the nature of the disable - it could be firmware, modified drivers, etc. It certainly would not be custom sound card chip sets - that would not make economic sense. And, I doubt that it anything as simple as a motherboard jumper.

Whatever the mechanism is - the result is the same - no function and no means of getting it back unless HP states otherwise.

Why would HP purposely disable the soundcard? Isn't a fully functioning soundcard what a consumer expects when they buy a new computer? The disability of not being able to record my own music from the soundcard completely limits my creativity and use of the computer. If it is really because they don't want people recording copyrighted audio streams then it is out of greed and selfishness.

Finally found the fix. Read a lot about how people think it's the RIAA buying out the manufacturers but who knows. Right click the windows sound icon, choose recording devices, right click anywhere, choose "show disabled devices", then "stereo mix" should appear, double click and choose "enable". I did update the realtek hd audio drivers from their website first. Worked for me on this tx2.

I knew it had to be something like that because it works fine for me in Win7.

That doesn't work for me. I tried that ages ago and even with the 'show disabled devices' selected I get no other options than mic or line in.

It's good to know it works in win 7.

Few things I read about while researching it, for the conexant sound cards to install the XP driver by running the install in xp compatibility mode. Others said that the problem was caused by the vista driver not being up to date, and that sometimes the realtek driver won't install properly. Apparently the problem has been with some sony laptops with conexant cards aswell. Good luck.

'what U hear' does not work on my IQ512it. I solved the problem using VLC player. When I listen a webradio for example, enable the "rec" button; then, push "stop" button and a mp3 file (like this: vlc-record-2010-01-22-18h24m19s-Classic KMPS HD2-Diamond Rio - How Your Love Makes Me Feel.mp3) is saved under "Documents". Bye

I spent an entire evening trying to figure out why I couldn't record from the stereo mix on my Touchsmart. I should have realised that it may be another own goal from HP in not enabling this basic functionality on their hardware. I guess I've got to use my other PC to do what I want...again! Go HP!

Hi Morpheus
Try this:
1. go to C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\adihdaud.inf_amd64_neutral_71fcbea221ef51b5
2. open "adihdaud.inf"
3. search the line containing "Stereo Mix". You'll find:
"HKR,AD1984B\\Disable, OutR, 1, 01 ; Disable Stereo Mix"
4. Change "Disable" in "Enable"
5. Repeat for all other lines containing "Stereo Mix"
6. Save the file "adihdaud.inf" (be sure to have the permission to save this file).
7. Make a manual driver install (Computer>Manage>Devices>AudioVideoControllers>SoundMAX) and select the file in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\adihdaud.inf_amd64_neutral_71fcbea221ef51b5
8. Restart the machine
9. When the computer is ready, launch SoundMAX Control Panel and under Recording folder you'll see the icon "Stereo Mix".
Ciao

Thanks for this stizzy. The 'adihaud.inf' file is in s slightly different location on my pc, but i found it. I'm getting the "cannot create the file" message when i try to save the modified file, despite running notepad as admin. I'm gonna try disabling UAC to see if that allows me the necessary permisssions. Is that the right way to go about it?
