i just sold my old desk top and i'm really interested in a ts 500 series. In the ts forum, there seems to be several problems going on with some ts. I also see lots of refurbs for sale. whats up with that, and which 500 series is the newest model and also which has the least problems. do you recommend i purchase a refurb as i think the prices appear to be ok.

To appease you, if you look hard, you'll find refurbs for many different desktops and laptops from all sorts of manufactures. As for seeing "lots" of TouchSmarts, I will say that the demand for TouchSmarts is probably not as great as it would be for your typical notebook or desktop PC, so inventories of refurbs may take longer to work through.

Many of these refurb TouchSmart PCs may not have had issues, but even those that did probably experienced something common and have been easily fixed. I, and many others I know, have had great success with refurbished products. You'll have to weight the risk vs. the potential savings and decide if the increased risk is worth it to you.

The model numbers for the TouchSmarts vary based on the build components, but anything starting with IQ8xx or IQ5xx is current model, the difference between those two being the screen size.

MOst of the computers I have bought in the past were refurbs. Both my sons have Refurbed HP notebooks for college and both notebooks are going strong after 2 years of college use.

Most refurbs are not "damaged", but have been returned for some reason or another and most refurbs that you purchase through an authorized reseller go through a rigrous testing process to make sure they are up to standards. I look at it this way; the PC i buy may or may not have been tested by the manufacturer before it was shipped but the refurb was definitely tested.

The only drawback to refurbs is that they usually come with a shorter warranty.

And... I'll repeat what I usually say about forums. It LOOKS like a lot of a particular model is having probelms because those people usually come to websites like this to solve their problems, so the amount of problems seems disporoprtionately high. Keeping that in mind, buy from a reputable seller and you should be fine.

You may be seeing a lot of refurbs because HP got a bad batch of harddrives. I have just been through the nighmare of having a complete crash because of one. Thank goodness I had good back up and a wonderful techie to help me. We were up all night last night reloading everything. HP does not pay for the work if you do it yourself but they do get you the new HD.
