Hey all, i was just wondering if it is possible to go from vista to xp and keep the touch screen capabilities.  I bought this computer for running music recording software and it just keeps crashing with Vista... I really need to get it to XP... any advise?

NO, it IS NOT possible. The touchscreen on the touchsmart is unique to this particulat line of PC's only and there are no XP drivers for the hardware at all.

Have you considered running your program in XP mode in Vista?

Vista performs quite well on the touchsmart once all the bloatware is removed.

My advice is to not try to get XP running on it as you will only end up with a really big headache (and a non-functional touchscreen). Try running your program in compatability mode. If your'e not sure how, just ask and I'll walk you through it.

Ben,
Start by removing the norton antivirus/internet security.
HP advisor is another good one to remove. If you want to give me a rundown of whats in your "add remove programs" list, I can give you a better idea.
As far as replacing your antivirus, there is lots of free alternatives. I prefer the AVG free (www.free.grisoft.com), but others have varied preferences and recomendations.

To run a program in xp compatability mode you have to find the "exe" for that program and right click on it. Choose properties and on the properties box you will see a tab that says "compatability". Choose XP SP1,2 or 3.
To find the proper exe, you'll need to do a bit of digging. Open up "my computer" and double click on your hard drive icon. Look for the "programs folder and double click on it. Scroll through the programs until you find a folder for the particular program you are needing to modify and double click on that folder. Next, scroll through the list of files until you find the exe file you need. It should look like the icon that you click on to launch the program. There may be two also, one is the exe and the other is "icon". Once you find the exe file, right click on it, choose properties, then the compatability tab, choose XP from the list and click apply. It will not ask you to reboot but I have found that doing so seems to work better.
If changing the program to compatability mode causes any problems, you can reverse the process and uncheck the compatability mode box in the last step above.

Hope that gets you started.

If you still have compatibility problems after following Dave's advice (unlikely, but possible), you can install XP in a virtual machine. You'll need to have a copy of XP to do this.

Download Virtual PC from the MS website and install it. It should walk you through the setup and you'll be able to install XP and run it virtually.
