Hi, I just purchased a Sony 5.1 surround sound speaker set and have 3 cables coming out of the control box. The green one i have put in to the line in at the side of the touchsmart pc but have a orange and black one which i don't know where they go. Also i can't change the speaker configuration in the soundmax to 5.1 it is still set up as stereo. Has anyone any ideas....... Do i need to buy a sound card and how do you install it ?. Thanks.

Taking a look at my TouchSmart, I don't see outputs for 6 channel sound. It's probably stereo only.

Creative makes some USB sound devices that will give you 5.1 capabilities, and it's easy to install since it's USB. That's the way I would go.

Doesn't it depend which model you have? I think the 816, for example has both a 2 channel stereo output and an SPDIF connector, which usually means multi-channel sound, but I'm not sure.

That's certainly possible. I have the IQ506, which I don't think has an optical output, but I need to pull it out again and take a second look.

the IQ506 does have SPDIF coax connector according to the spec's...

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01481523&lc=en&dlc=en&cc...

Sound/Audio
Integrated High Definition audio
Audio codec: ADI AD1984B
Supports 2 audio channels through an analog connection
Supports one S/PDIF digital connection

Therefore it should have 5.1 support, actually according to the codec specification it should have 6.1, 24bit 192Khz and therefore it should also have 5.1 speaker configuration in the soundmax control - but as the orignal poster mentions, I have the same problem on my IQ508.

I've also gone down to the local HP reseller and see that all of their Touchsmart PC have the same - I suspect the driver needs to improve, we shouldn't have to go out to by a creative 5.1 surround usb card, (which I have done so that I could use my 5.1 reciever with HDTV built in card and music and stuff)..

This is a major concern to me and probably the one single most disappointment I have with the IQ500 i have - a part from that I'm more than happy with the unit - my only wish is that HP get up and get a decent driver for the sound card together..
