Are you talking about the TouchSmart Video application not being able to play your videos? If so, then Windows Media Player probably doesn't play them eithter, right? Do you know what the encoding of the videos is? How were they produced? You may need to install other codecs than DivX.
Hey there guys.
I recently bought an HPIQ820 Touchsmart and I'm so happy & pleased with it. I couldn't have bought a better computer!
But, that having been said, I've encountered an issue. When I try to play any of my video files, it won't work, saying it's not supported -- the files are common AVI files and they work with my normal video player (VLC).
I tried installing the latest DivX coded for 64bit, but then the DivX shuts down and it won't work either. I don't know if this matters or not, but the video I'm trying to play is stored on my external, connected WD harddrive.
Glad for any help at all!
To be honest, I haven't tried the Media Player but I guess what you're saying is right. I don't know the specific coded, but it's all very random: some are TV shows while other are full-length movies; they all have in common that they can't be played :(
I'm sorry for being so obscure. If there's anything more in particular you want me to explain, just say so!
Well, if you could try Windows Media Player on some of the files and report any error messages, that would help. Also, it would be useful to know what the source of the videos that don't play is. In other words, are they downloaded from the Internet, captured on the PC, captured on a different PC, etc.? This is not a simple thing to troubleshoot through a forum, so the more concrete information you can post, the better.
I tried playing them in the Windows Media Player, and the process went fine and it got the necessary codec files (as displayed in the corner down on the left) but when it plays them, it does so without visual. The audio is there and works fine but the visual doesn't. There's no error message of any kind...
ETA: When I tried another file, it said that it doesn't support the codec.
I won't lie, basically all of the files are downloaded from the Internet. I just think it's a bit iffy since I've never had a problem with it before, I can even run them fine in Media player on my laptop, which is only half as fancy!
Just lemme know if I can provide you with any other info as well. Thanks for your help dude, it's appreciated!
You might want to install ffdshow-tryouts, a pretty comprehensive codec pack that should enable playback of most video formats using Windows Media Player (and hopefully the HP TouchSmart Video app as well):
http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/
The biggest issue might be 64-bit compatibility.
I'm going to try that out at once. I'll get back to you as soon as I know more about it. Thanks so, so much for your help! I wish you stars :)
Okay, so that worked like a charm. Thank you SO SO much for your help, once again! A thousand stars and well wishes your way :D
Well it seems I have the same problem. Except I did install ffdshow, and Windows Media Player can play my AVCHD files (.m2ts extension) just fine now.
However, the video player in the touchsmart doesnt recognize the files - when I browse the folders where the files exist it says no video files. HOWEVER - if I rename the video files with a .WMV extension it does see the files and playi them just fine.
I really dont want to rename all my video files just to have TouchSmart video player recognize them. I've tried modifying some of the .ini files for touchsmart but no luck....
Any suggestions?

I don't know of a way to make the TouchSmart video player recognize m2ts files. But there are file batch-rename utilities that would make the renaming semi-automatic.
Maybe other people here have more ideas. DaveTN? WaveRider? Diane?
