Hi All,

I have recently upgraded my Vista x64 home premium on my iq508a where everything was running perfecto to windows 7 x64 ultimate.  Did this cause every forum thread I've read indicates things install and run just fine.

Everything seemed to upgrade perfectly except for an external sound card I have, the X-Fi 5.1 surround USB Creative Sound card - the in-built sound card on the iq508a works just fine though so I have disconnected the X-Fi.

However, I get this single screen flickering horizontally across either the whole bottom half of the screen or sometimes the whole screen every 20-30 seconds or so.  If I change to 16bit color then flicker goes but no areo is present and display just not the same...

I tried downloading the latest x64 nvidia driver from nvidia.com...

My current version is as found by the nvidia utility is:

NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM v1.1) 185.93

And nvidia recommeds this latest version:

GeForce Release 186 for Notebooks
Version:
 186.03  WHQL
Release Date: June 9, 2009

I tried installing this latest version from nvidia but get the following error:

Yup, weve all been getting that error. My theory is that it is either that HP uses a different device id than Nvidia does or that the nvidia drivers are nit "signed" drivers. 64 bit drivers must be signed in order to work, so my guess is that that may be contributing to the problem.
There was another post that mentioned that you could get modified drivers from laptopvideotogo.com but I think I'll hold off on that for a bit.

One of te other members posted that he was able to use the IQ846 Nvidia drivers. I tried it on my 816 and it worked. I'm using the RC of Win7.

Heres a link to the drivers: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv-7093...

Since I am running win7, the HP install package does not run so I have to use winrar to extract the files. I simply extracted the files to a folder with the same name and navigates to the src folder. In the src folder I located the setup file and ran it. All ran without any problems and my video drivers are now updated.

Actually, I just downloaded the Desktop version of the 9300 GS and this installed no problems and now I have the NVIDIA Control panel available - but the screen still flickers.

I'll now try the HP link above... (I might roll-back if this doesn't work)

Thanks Dave. This process worked perfectly on my machine. Editing the post to note that I'm on the full production release of Windows 7 Professional.

August 16, 2009 8:07 PM

hi dave, i tried that link from hp and did try running the setup from the src folder but still i get that error as i previously mentioned.

my guess is that i'm now installed the rtm version of win7 not the RC version...

i now have uninstalled the nvidia driver, then tried to re-install any of the above drivers mentioned and they all fail to install - lol

so i rebooted, now the origianl Microsoft driver is installed, I tried again to install the 190 version from Nvidia and now that too doesn't install either - lol..

so my guess is that the RC version may have some compatibility options enabled which rtm version doesn't... i don't, i'm waffling - i'll revert back to vista i think the screen flicker is too annoying to work with...

August 16, 2009 8:31 PM

Try this if you revert back to vista. Reinstall vista and all the updates and drivers. Hone down the bloatware and then do an upgrade install to windows 7. I tried that and it worked fine.
The only catch was I had t right click on all the touchsmart software exe's and choose vista compatability mode. After doing that, I have afully functional touchsmart suite in windows 7.

I just did a complete clean re-install - no flickering!

But, as soon as I loaded up web browser and entered this site - an adobe download was prompting me to install - i clicked yes to install it. And now as I type my screen is once again flickering... not as often as before though.

I'll give this a weeks chance maybe this is once off thingo or something...

ahhh, guess what ?? I downloaded the display driver for the iq508a specifically and installed that from HP Drivers download - extracted .exe to directory and ran the src driver setup.exe and all is working just dandy now!

So the unified driver isn't all that unified after all ;)

thanks for the hint dave!!!

Has anyone found a fix to these flickers? I'm using a Touchsmart IQ506 with the RTM Windows 7 Ultimate. Helppp lol.

August 31, 2009 6:09 AM

Download and save this driver for your IQ506 (Vista x64 Driver).

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv-6118...

Then install winrar and extract all the files and then run setup.exe from the src directory.

You should then apply the update graphics driver as well...

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv-6186...

Then download the keyboard and OSD driver...

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv-6119...

If you have TV tuner then download and extract and run setup.exe...

Cheers..

All, I just posted a step-by-step walkthrough in another thread for getting the IQ816's NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GS working correctly with the NVIDIA Windows 7 x64 / Windows Vista x64 drivers under Windows 7 x64 RC 7100.

These steps should also work for Windows Vista x64, and moreover, they should work for the IQ500 series NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS card. Just be sure to read through them carefully.

You can find the post here in this forum:

thanks for that!

Being so eager to get native x64 display driver installed, I tried the steps you provided and successfully installed the drivers.

BUT after installing the nvidia drivers my screen started flickering again :bugga:. I rebooted to see if that would fix it, but flickering was still there - HOWEVER after a few minutes (while typing this reply) the flickering had stopped - BUT then once I moved my mouse over the scroll and scrolled down in a web browser the flickering came back.

So I will now revert back to HP x64 Vista Supplied Driver....

Very interesting. I've been reading a lot here and there about this flickering issue with display drivers, but I haven't yet seen it at all.

Granted, I just did a fresh install of Win 7 Ultimate x64 RC 7100, updated everything that I could via Windows Update, installed the NextWindow Windows 7 multi-touch driver, and then installed the NVIDIA drivers as I outlined.

Have your checked your refresh rate? In the NVIDIA control panel (assuming you're using advanced settings option), under Display > Change Resolution, there's a refresh rate setting. Mine's at 59Hz.

I have already re-installed the vista driver supplied by HP, I didn't get the chance to check refresh rates - although I do recall that I did when I originally clean installed Windows 7 Ultimate (RTM version 6.1.7600 N/A Build 7600) and refresh rates were configured accordingly.

I suppose my card is a 9300M GS, yours is a 9600M GS and suspect the 9300M GS is still having this issue OR might be the fact that I'm running the RTM version and not any RC release.

Slightly off topic - Can you please tell me where I can download the NextWindow multi-touch driver or is this already installed in Windows 7?

October 6, 2009 6:40 PM

oh nevemind - used google and found NextWindo Multi-touch driver...

http://www.nextwindow.com/nextwindow_support/windriver.html

October 6, 2009 6:57 PM

Hi Mike,

Off topic again, I installed the nextwindow driver and all, but what do i do with it? Where can I download multi-touch software from (trial or otherwise?)

October 6, 2009 7:10 PM

The nextwindow driver is the multitouch software.
Some things you can use multitouch in now are microsoft picture viewer, the touchsmart software suite and a few other things.
I think multitouch will really take off once Windows 7 becomes more mainstream.

I am still having a flicker - has there been any update to this issue?

November 7, 2009 10:09 AM

No update but it seems there's a decent amount of these and it keeps ending up as a hardware issue from failing graphics cards.
