Folks, I wish I could say I was a technical-type person but unfortunately that isn't the case.  I'm an ole' folk with a new computer and a question.  And yes, I looked at the book but it didn't help.  I have a Linksys Wireless Broadband Router gadget that I've used for some time with my laptop.  And as long as my new HP is across the room from this router, it picks  up whatever it's supposed to get from it in order for us to get internet connection.  However, when we moved the computer to a different location, closer to the router, then no connection.  According to the instruction book, the built-in wireless LAN is located at the top left and right of the computer.  Waved that little router thing all around the top of the computer but no connection.  Moved my HP back across the room, connection.

Without laughing too hard, can some kind soul tell me what's the scoop with regard to the locations between the computer and the router.

With much thanks in advance,

Peach

Not sure I have the answer but is the router near another wireless device such as a phone etc?

No, the only other wireless device in the room was my laptop in its usual position on the table.

This may sound weird, but having a router too close can sometimes make them have unstable connections... I could go into the geeky radio guy aspects of what can cause it (all of which is frankly speculation without testing at your location) but the gist of it is, move a bit further away from the wireless router and you'll be fine.

You get the same effect with TV and even radio... if you are too close to the transmitter, you get into a dead zone... strange, but true and documented effect of radio waves (which is what a wireless connection is, after all)

the interesting side note of how radio "skips" can be demonstrated by a personal example.

I live 10 miles outside Wichita, KS. At night, I can listen to an am radio station in San Antonio, TX or Minneapolis, MN clearer and stronger than to a station in Wichita.

The phenomena is not the exact same, but it is an interesting effect of radio waves and how they move and work...

If your that close to the router just use a Ethernet Cable.

Thanks for all the responses. I've just moved my computer back to its original position and farter away from the router and everything seems to be fine.
