Hi,

I have the option of buying a 'slightly used' IQ515 in the next few days with a T8100 (2.1GHz) 4GB DDR2, 500GB 5400rpm, Nvidia 9600m gs etc etc

A few questions

1) How much would you value this slightly used (no visible marks at all) IQ515UK at? Preferably in GBP but I can convert!

2) How likely is it that I will be able to upgrade the graphics card in the future... Not necessary at the moment as a 9600m gs is ample, however, there will some a time when I will want to upgrade.

3) How upgradable are other components such as disk drive (blu-ray burner one day!), Processor, RAM (though 4gb maybe maximum, shame its not ddr3)

4) How recent is the IQ515, when were they released? How does it compare to any newer models. Was the IQ515 top of the range when it came out?

5) How changable is the wireless card? I will be experimenting with OSX, I believe OSX will become a lot more useable soon due to the possibility of Apple experimenting with kexts for a tablet pc. I can modify kexts etc and I will aim to get a stable, retail version of OSX just for the sake of it! I understand that currently the wireless does not work (Any idea what model it is? I'm guessing it's not broadcom?) USB Wireless on OSX is a joke!

Many thanks...

You may be hearing a lot more from me!!

1 no idea
2 don't even think of upgrading the graphics board, it's not easy, read the many threads here on it.
3 RAM and HD, easy upgrade, slot load DVD drive, not anywhere near as easy
4 no idea
5 no idea, but you can always use a USB wireless adapter.

Thanks...

I despise USB Wireless Adapters... they are nowhere near as effective as internal!

Is the RAM expandable beyond 4GB, do you know?

Is there a limit on the size of the hard drive? And is the hard drive 2.5 or 3.5 SATA? An SSD would be nice eventually.

Which TouchSmart comes with the best graphics card? Is there anything with around a 9800M?

Thanks

EDIT: Is there a TouchSmart with DDR3 ram at all? Would be nice for future proofing! Thanks again

The 5xx series is expandable past 4GB
They use a standard 3.5" drive

The recommendation across the board is that if you want higher end graphics, do the special order for them via HP

But suffice to say, it's not a gaming machine, so you shouldn't be looking for gaming level performance. You can get up to 9600M performance, that's it.
Most of this info is readily available via the HP site with the exception of knowing that it's a 3.5" drive. (I could swear the memory expansion was there but can't find it now)

Careful, the very first 5xx's were not expandable beyond 4GB, but I believe the more recent ones are. Check the specs for the system you're contemplating before buying.

oh very useful to know! I hadn't seen anyone with a distinction on which could and couldn't in the threads I read, only the frustration that the 800's weren't and the 500's were.

If you read some of the threads here closely, you'll find a mention of two motherboard code names. The early/first motherboard only supported 4GB, the later/second motherboard 8GB.

The boards are actually documented:

First motherboard: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c01489642

Second motherboard: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c01635715

Any idea of the model of the sound card? Or even make?
And the model of the wireless and bluetooth card, is it replaceable? PCI or laptop style?
I can see that it comes with DDR2 RAM, but some motherboards support both... Any chance that this does?
Processor upgrade possible? I know that it uses laptop processors... any chance that I could put my spare T9800 in there?! That would be nice! :P
How new is the IQ515? Is the IQ535 newer or older? Is there much performance increase? Do any of the newer ones support DDR3 RAM?

Many thanks for all your help so far!

The sound card is on the mobo. The audio chip is listed on the two pages for the motherboards that I linked to above. The wireless card is laptop style. Not sure if it is replaceable. I've read rumors here on the site that there are BIOS locks on what kinds of cards can be used. DDR3 RAM: Probably not supported. Processor upgrades: Not officially supported, but search this site's forums and you'll find some threads that talk about it. Any replacement would void the warranty anyway. The IQ535 is newer. I don't think the performance has changed much, mostly the software is newer on newer models.

The bottom line (as I see it): You buy a TouchSmart because you like the All-In-One form factor (and the touch aspects, of course) and are willing to give up upgradeability for the form factor. Systems like this are not easily upgradeable and don't lend themselves well to high end gaming. If that's what you're after (upgradeability and high end gaming), you'd probably be happier with a standard desktop tower PC, possibly a gaming PC.
