Could you link me to the guides you used?
As long as it works, and you do not have to worry about getting a BSoD while something important is running, then you might as well run with it.
What are you mainly using it for?
Hello,
for four days now I own a Touchsmart tx2 1150eg (ZM-84 processor) and I am quite happy with it.
The only thing that annoys me is that the CPU goes up to 97°C under load and therefore decreases its core speed until it's cooler again. How can HP use a cooling system that is not able to cool the CPU?!?
So as it is recommended by lots of members here in the forum, I am currently undervolting it using K10Stat and IntelBurnTest to verify the CPU is still working correctly.
I set down the voltage for the P2 state from 0.8 to 0.75 Volt. The notebook seems to be stable.
//EDIT:
In P0 I was able to decrase by 0.025 Volt to 1.075 Volt - otherwise I keep getting wrong results in IntelBurnTest.
At the moment I am testing out how much I am able to decrease voltage in P1 mode. HP set the voltage to 0.95; I got it down to 0.75 but I crashed with a BSOD after the IntelBurnTest successed. *confused*
So I set back the voltage to 0.775 Volt which ist still 0.175 Volt less than HP set. According to CPU-Z the CPU is actually running at 0.775 Volt with a core speed of about 1150 MHz.
Is that really possible?!? I am really wondering whether I did something wrong. On the internet there always stands that you are able to undervolt by about 0.05 Volt - but 0.175 Volt?!?
Are there any other programms that provocate CPU failures you can recommend?
How much were you able to undervolt your tx2?
Cheers

Depends what state you are using at the moment. As you saw in the program there, there are three different P states that you can set the voltage for.
P0 is your maximum processor speed, and base (my CPU is the ZM-87) voltage on it was 1.375v. (2400mhz)
P1 is your medium speed. My stock for that is 0.9v (1200mhz)
P2 is your low power setting. Stock on mine was .8. (600mhz)
After some testing, I got my P0 state to 1.0875v stable, so a total of 0.2875v less than its stock. This has helped considerably with temps. I was surprised at the results since I kept hearing the .05v less max too, but those are my results.
P1 state I have to 0.825 (might be able to get this lower if I spend the time to work on it, but its okay for now), and P2 I have at 0.75.
As for programs to test with, Prime95 is always a good candidate, just set it to run "Small FFTs" and let it run for a few hours, if there are any errors they will show up and the program will stop calculations and inform you something went wrong. If you want full heat on the CPU, use the inplace large FFT options and again let it run for a few hours.

Thanks for your responses!

Of course, I used Aspire Gemstone: K10STAT AMD Griffin Processor Undervolting Guide.
>> What are you mainly using it for?
Well - as a laptop :-D
Currently, I am playing around with Multitouch in Silverlight and WPF; so developing is one use.
>> This has helped considerably with temps.
Yes - this also applies to my laptop. At the moment I even "disabled" the P0 state in the power settings. The speed seems to be still enough but it is much much more quite now.
>> if there are any errors they will show up and the program will stop calculations and inform you something went wrong
Thanks! I did not know whether Prime95 really does inform about errors so I did not run it yet - I will do now.
That guide is great, based alot of my work off of that one for testing and overview of it.
Another good thread on this is:
http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/showthread.php?t=21877
They discuss some of the various programs for this as they evolve and also offer advice on some of the issues people have had with applying it on startup.
I was toying with the idea of creating profiles for disabling P0 and P1 for when I just need it to last the day for minor tasks like email and word processing, havnt bothered with it yet though. Might give that a second look if you have had good luck with it.
