I bought my tx2 three months ago and all the sudden yesterday, my stylus stopped responding about 50% of the time. Now, it doesn't work at all. I can use the touchscreen with my fingers, but just not with the pen. I don't know if I have a virus that is effecting this (ran avast and search and destroy, no results, so probably not) or if there is just something wrong with the computer, but I am really at my wit's end. I am an artist so I really need to stylus to actually work for me. Also, when I restarted the computer to see if that helped, I got a blue screen of death saying there was a problem and the computer needed to be restarted AGAIN. Nothing has worked so far, so if I don't figure it out soon, I'm taking it in to get it checked out. It's under warranty so it should be covered. If anyone knows how to fix this, please give details.

I'm honestly going out of my mind, so all help will be appreciated.

A little more information first off. What operating system are you running, have you upgraded it to windows 7, or are you still on win vista 32/64?

Considering you are getting bluescreens, there is either a problem with your operating system experiencing issues from corruption or driver problems, or a hardware issue.

I would start troubleshotting the software issues first off. First off, try using Windows Backup restore to restore your computer to a pervious date a week or two before you started experiencing these issues. If that fails, you can try reformatting or using your system restore disk if you purchased one with your computer.
Windows 7 is very good to use, and once its installed go ahead and download the latest drivers from ntrig's website and install those and see if your issues are resolved. Assuming that fails, would revert to it being a hardware problem in which case you will have to deal with HP.

Best of luck sir, let us know how it turns out.

I'm still working on the OS that it came with, but have been considering switching to something like Linux.

Also, excuse me for being a bit ignorant, but would windows backup be a backup CD? I feel really stupid for asking but my boyfriend usually deals with my computer issues. I would ask him but he is busy for the next week.

I am guessing it is Vista then. Vista has a built in system recovery system that will work sometimes to restore your system to an earlier Point in time.

You can access it from the Control panel under system and security-backup and restore.

Do you mean the backup and restore center?

Also, an update: I've noticed if I scribble endlessly in the Tablet PC Input Panel, it will occasionally pick up a signal from the pen, but it won't write.

Yes, backup and restore center. From there, you can select to restore your computer to an earlier point in time, and you can select from a list of dates that it has created restore points for.

I would suggest something a week or two before you started experiencing these issues. It will keep your personal files and documents, but programs and drivers that you might have installed since then will probably be removed.

Oh I am stupid. I tried that but I haven't backed up my files previously so I really can't restore.........

Also: did troubleshooting in my N-trig settings, and it came up with nothing

September 3, 2009 4:53 PM

It keeps your personal files. It only removes programs that have been installed after the time period that you select.

Well it won't let me restore....

September 3, 2009 4:59 PM

Any reason given?

It said it was because I don't have any backup points yet.

Anyway I called HP today, and they are sending me a new stylus for free. Apparently this happens occasionally. Rarely, but it happens. The woman I spoke to said it shouldn't be a software problem.

Hope it works out for you! The reason I thought it is software is because you stated you were getting bluescreen crashes in windows which indicates an issue going on.

Hope it turns out to just be a pen issue and the bluescreen was just a fluke, let us know how it turns out. :)

Oh well, I've been getting random bluescreens pretty much ever since I got the computer.... My boyfriend (AKA resident computer geek) is trying to figure it out but we still don't know why it happens from time to time.

A bad stylus shouldn't cause the bluescreen crashes. Most likely a heat or RAM issue.
Make sure your laptop has plenty ventilation when using it. (not to stereotype) but I work on computers a lot and see this issue often - girls seem to like to put their laptops on a pillow on their laps while sitting on the couch, chir or bed, because 1, its comfortable, and 2, it protects their legs from the hot bottom of the laptop. While convenient and comfortable, it blocks the vents and the laptop will overheat and crash. (did that solve your problem? :-) )
Another issue is either bad RAM or poorly seated RAM. Have your boyfriend remove and replace/reseat the RAM, better yet, have him rotate out the RAM modules. Remove 1 module and run the computer for a while. It'll be a bit slower but if no crashes, the module that was removed may be bad. Crashes? swap the modules out again...to the other one. No crashes, then that is a good module and the other is bad.
Some times hard disk drive problems can cause BSOD's. Ask him to scan the drive for errors. And finally...well for now, spyware and virus's can cause BSOD's too. Check for that.

Hope that helps.

Woohoo! I won my Touchsmart!

Well I do realize that the bluescreens have nothing to do with the stylus, but i know what you mean about ventilation. The fan on this laptop was very poorly placed and the computer gets very hot sometimes. Anyone who was worked with the tx2 should know this... Interesting to know that this could be causing bluescreens, though. Thank you!

Any updates on if you resolved your BSOD issues yet? Curious to hear what the cause turns out to be.

It apparently could be related to the crappy placement of the fan. Hopefully if I just figure out how to alleviate that it should stop
