Maybe multitouch in Windows 7 can change your mind?
I've had my touchsmart for a year now and I have to say- I really don't use the touch screen all that much. Actually... I don't use it at all. It basically serves as a cool toy to show to my friends when they come up... I find myself wishing I had one of HP's sleek little laptops instead. You know, the ones that cost WAY less than the TS does and are portable and cute? Those... :-) I'm a graphic designer, so I thought that I'd use the touch screen a lot... but I find that the mouse and tablet are way more precise than my finger.
So I wondered... what do you all use your touch screens for? Anything cool? Anything that might make me fall back in love with my super expensive shiny heavy desktop?
I'll admit it's handy when the mouse batteries die and you're waiting for them to recharge- but I feel like I'm missing the point of having a touch screen.
That's true... it does look pretty awesome. I am a retail store associate lucky enough to qualify for the free copy through Microsoft's Expertzone. I've taken the courses and ordered my free copy, so maybe soon I will find out!
I realize I only have had mine for a few weeks and the novelty hasn't worn off but I think placement helps with the touchsmart as well. I put this one right on my coffee table in front of the couch. While the KB is right there under it, I use it quite often just by reaching over and touching it. I also have the mouse on the end table, so when I am too lazy to reach for the screen I still use the mouse and tabletpc input to do what I want.
I really thought it would just be cutesy and I would have little use for the touch screen when I bought it, but I got a refurb at a great price. Then when I first got it setup, I turned off the mouse and stowed the KB forcing myself to use it by touch for a full day and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to use it by this method. I also went through the handwriting detection program and trained it to my style. Worked okay before then, but does much better now that I have trained it.
I find that in this configuration it is so much more convenient to use as now I can sit on the couch and use the PC and still watch TV on my HD panel on the wall. Where before the computer was always on a computer desk in another room. So I really do believe that when HP designed these, they were thinking of alternative methods of use from the old conventional desktops. Some of their videos for this product to imply exactly that.
Solitaire on the touchscreen is a GREAT upper body workout. :-)

Woohoo! I won my Touchsmart!
No, I don't touch that much. The most that the screen is touched is when great nieces/nephew is over & they want to play hearts.

I touch off and on. Sometimes I forget I have touch but I think I may just be taking it for granted. Several times at work I find myself reaching up to touch my screen only to remind myself that my work computer is not a touchscreen.
I like it when I play come games on my computer and find it easier to position the pointer when I want to move the pointer after selecting an object or group of objects to move.
I have a touch tablet also from Toshiba that requires a pen. I find I mostly use the pen to scroll the window down on web pages. I am waiting to see how that one works with windows 7.
One thing I think will come in handy is the Virtual XP mode built into windows 7. I just found out that I can use it to run equipment that works with XP does not work with Vista or 7. (I have a HP Scanner and a Color Lazerjet that don't have Vista Drivers but work fine in XP so I don't have to throw them out now!).
Smile, God is watching you.
I am using an IQ846 Touchsmart
I try to use the touchscreen functionality as much as i can. I have no mouse connected at the moment, only my keyboard. I recon it takes a bit of time to get rid of those old mouse/keyboard habits.
Cooliris is definately the best application to use on the touchsmart, it's fast and it allows you to browse the web the way it should be on a touchsmart. If only it would allow you to view video's and pdf that would be sweet!
ManuDev,
Heh heh heh.. thats a good way to MAKE you use the touch feature. Good idea. Many of us get spoiled by using a mouse and revert back to it without even thinking.
I think I'm going to turn mine off for a while and try to go total touch.

I've only had my TX2 for about 3 weeks now, and I got it primarily for the stylus/tablet mode (notes, presenting, etc.), but I love laying in bed, either reading an e-book or surfing the net in the tablet mode. Very natural. I had an HP TC1100 until it died, and I wanted a replacement for that. Other than more fan than I care for, this has been nice.
I use my touch quite a bit. Especially when I am doing a bunch of data entry. I can reach the screen as easily as the mouse, and to me its quicker, up, flick back down, instead of over, move around and then back onto the keyboard.
I have been doing a bit of drawing with it, but not happy with results yet (me, not the media, is the issue...)

If I had this pc in a better position, I would use that feature more. But I have it next to the bed so it doubles as my bedroom tv. I'm not really close enough for touching it much. But I like having the feature.
I've actually gotten to a lazy point with this where I use the onscreen keyboard with mouse and don't even bother to type on a keyboard half the time.
