The battery indocator is not so accurate in telling you how the batteries are. First try changing the batteries out.
Also, in another post you mentioned that you were having problems with one of your USB ports. The keyboard and mouse communicate with the 816 via a USB reciever that is under the bottom edge of the front of your touchsmart in a recessed slot. Try this: Turn off your touchsmart and pull out the KB/Mouse receiver dongle from its hidden port. Plug it into another port...you can use one on your USB hub and boot back up. See if that works.
USB ports are usually set up in pairs so if you have one bad one, there is most likely its other paired port that is bad too.
In the worst case you may have just a bad port but it can also be a sign of worse things to come. If you are still under warranty, then you need to make a call to HP soon.
