Hi Bill
Did you ever have a USB device that seemed a bit more difficult to plug in? If so, it may have been plugged in backwards and bent the pins inside the usb port. I've seen it happen before and it can cause a whole bunch of problems from a burned out motherboard to the USB ports working intermittently. Use a flashlight to look at the ports and see if you can see any bent pins. If you can, then there is one of your problems.
On the other hand, I have a similar problem with my TX2500 tablet. I have one USB port that whatever I plug into it causes my tablet to freeze. It happens both in Win7 and Vista so I know its a hardware porblem. I looked at my port though and everyting looks fine.
Since you were able to identify which port causes the problem then I would avoid that one and continut to use the powered hub for your devices. I do the same with my touchsmart and its much more convenient.
