Did you get into your Touchsmart? I had similar issues and it was quite easy in the end! Much easier than it seems!
Let me know if you need help.
Paul
I own an IQ770 and the motherboard is fried (A8SN-CF). Obviously since this was a custom motherboard made for the IQ7xx series of touchsmarts, its not available anymore (not from HP, ebay or other used component sites that I've looked at).
Anyway, so I'm taking this as an opportunity and wondering if I can upgrade my touchsmart instead. I know that other models of motherboards won't fit in the case, but that's fine, I dont mind it looking "ugly" at the back, or even buying a new case but I do want to reuse (if possible) the power supply and the touchscreen.
I'm familiar with computer hardware and putting it together, but there are two things I do not know about:
1. How do you connect the touchscreen to another motherboard? do I need a PCI card? A specific kind of motherboard? Some special cables?
2. How do you open the touchsmart to its bare bones?
I tried opening it up but it does get pretty complicated if you want to take out the entire motherboard. Is there a user guide somewhere?
Thanks in advance.
No I didn't! Did you have the same problem? Let me know how you managed it.
Thanks!
Pranay
Hi Pranay,
This is from memory so you may need to improvise slightly:
To open the touchsmart you need to remove the rear cover first (2 screws either side on the rear). Remvoe the rear cover by sliding it off.
Remove the dvd drive from the bay (theres a screw holding it in place).
You need to remove the front cover to get at the motherboard front holding screws. The front plastic panel cover pops off easily. Once this is off you need to remove the screw at the back of the front panel on the same side as the PSU. There isnt one on the other side. Then there are two or three screws on the front panel to remove. Next, there are two hidden screws - took me a week to find!!! On the front panel which open/closes for the USB ports etc, there are markings on the plastc indicating USB etc. This is a sticker and can be lifted off to reveal two silver screws! Removoe these.
The front panel should now unclip quite easily to reveal front of the motherboard and you can get at the motherboard retaining screws, XTX graphics card etc.
To remove the motherboard you need to remove all the screws, remove the screws to the PSU and Fan. Remove the screws on the CPU heatsink (4 screws) and the XTX card heatsink (2 screws). Lift out the fan and heatsink.
HINT: USING A DECENT DIGITAL CAMERA (HI RESOLUTION) TAKE AS MANY PICTURES OF THE CABLES AND CONNECTORS ESPECIALLY AROUND THE PSU CONNECTOR PAR OF THE MOTHERBOARD INCASE YOU FORGET WHERE THINGS GO BACK AS THE CONNECTORS ARE ALL SIMILAR SIZES
Remove the connectors and the power 24 pin connector and the MB should life out.
Hope this helps. Let me know how you get on. It can be a bit tricky but I stripped down and re-built two of these bad boy touchsmarts about 5 times each!!!! bit of a pro now!
Remove the
Then
Thanks - I'll try to do as you suggest - I managed to remove everything everything except the front panel because I couldn't figure out, so your comments help.
One question though - if my motherboard is fried do you suggest any particular one I should get? I can get a new one and get everything working but I'm not sure how to reconnect the touchscreen. Is it connected to the motherboard via a card or does it plug in directly somewhere?
The front panel was my sticking point... the hidden screws are under the sticker!!! its easy from then on!
The MB (I beleive) needs to be an exact replacement as it is custom built for the touchsmart. HP will sell it for £300 which is cheaper than my suppliers (I own a PC repair business and have lots of trade contacts).
Shipped from the USA will cost about £200-£250 max.
I ended up buying a faulty touchsmart from ebay and replaced the MB and CPU and used the original graphics card and memory and fixed the problems.
The touchscreen VGA connector is under the front panel and is a non-standard connector (AFAIK) which I assume is designed for the touchsmart MB only. I could be wrong, it could be a laptop type connector but if I remember it seemed a bit too large for a standard laptop MB.
I will double check today and get back to you, as then you could use a cheaper laptop MB.
Yes, I actually contacted HP and they do not have the motherboard available anywhere in the world (which is a bit ridiculous for product support)- so basically I am stuck unless I can use another MB. I really don't want to lose my touchscreen because that was the whole reason behind me buying the touchsmart in the first place!
If there is a way that I can attach the touchsvcreen to a different motherboard it would be sufficient for me to continue to tinker around with this stuff for longer.
anyhow, I'll try and open it up later today and will post pictures of what I find - might help someone else in the future as the touchsmart is one complex beast to open up!
Thanks for your help so far.
When I spoke to HP two weeks ago they were more than happy to sell me a motherboard! Take a look at their official suppliers:

I think I contacted EET Nordic (recommended to me by HP support).
I realize this post is more than 1 yr old, BUT, has anyone found a MoBo to replace/upgrade the IQ7 series. I have an IQ775 and may be facing a MoBo replacement. I would love to upgrade some things in the process. Any compatible MoBos available?

Yup. I agree with Diane. There are zero alternatives. I had to trash my IQ770. The only things I could salvage were the RAM and the hard drive.
Good luck with yours!
Can you salvage the TouchScreen?
Also here are my computer symptoms...do you think this is a dead MoBo?
Computer stopped in progress. When rebooted, green light momentarily on HDD light, then goes to the Dvd drive, it "works" for about a minute and stops. Screen is totally black, no logo. I put the Rescue Disk in, no help. i alternately disconnected the hard drive and the dvd. ie: booting with only one connected. I replaced the MoBo battery. I made numerous attempts with the F10 F5 bios setting protocol. No response. Power supply and fan/heatsink seem to be fine. I changed the keyboard and mouse. No help. Some where I read that removing the memory modules and putting them in one at a time and in different places would help. I havent tried that yet. Any other thoughts or ideas? I am going to hook up the HDD to an external enclosure to retrieve some data. But who knew it was a laptop HDD??? Have to go buy an enclosure for it.
Hi SeaJay,
That was my priority as well, i.e. salavaging the touchscreen. However, I gave up after my attempts.
Your symptoms seem to be identical to mine. Your BIOS is okay, which is why it scans for an optical drive and so it lights up.
I did (in the end) give my 770 to a London based HP Touchsmart specialist, who told me what I kinda knew already - that the mobo is dead and even though they had electronics experts they wouldnt be able to fix it.
As your symptoms seem to be the same ones I had, I hate to say this, but I think it is not salvageable.
The touchscreen itself uses proprietory signals from the mb itself. If you had elec equipment you might be able to figure it out and re-use it, but I didn't and so mine's probably in a garbage dump somewhere now.
Good luck!
So it is either a new but exactly the same MoBo or the trash heap? Did you salvage all you data from HD?
a) Yup.
b) I salvaged all the data from the hard drive.
You could also look at ebay to find a 775 you can buy on the cheap.
I thank you generously for your advice. I appreciate it. Would you buy another TouchSmart?
They're too disgustingly attractive to ignore (even when you have to trash them 2 years later).
Hi guys,
I fixed one of these last night without the need for soldering etc. I removed the PCI-E graphics card. I moved the VGA cable from LVDS1 to LVDS2 and rebooted and all was fine. It's reverted to the onboard vga chip. I'm going to add some more thermal paste to it in the hope that it doesn't over heat too. All seems fine so far...
I have the same problem having an ongoing discussion with the CEO in America about this model. I have also contacted sun newspaper who would like everyone who has this problem to write in to them. Go to sun newspaper then under have a story to tell. It's worth a shot to get hp to admit this model has a major flaw.
