Has anyone heard what the NEXT version(s) of the Touchsmart will be (after the IQ816)?

- What features will it have?

- When will it come out ?

You should check out the .NET Rocks! Interview that was just posted. Carl and Richard asked the same question, and though mum is pretty much the word right now, there are a few hints given.

The IQ800 is pretty new, and the TouchSmart laptop was just announced, so I'm not sure how soon you'll see a new TouchSmart desktop for a while.

Better question... what features do YOU want it to have?

Thanks for the link! Great show, was that just today?
The HP guys mentioned new things sometime in 2009, I hope that doesn't mean January 2009, because I'm getting my IQ816 ASAP.

More on what features I want when I have a chance to get to know it personally.

One thing struck me - do you think we'll be able to upgrade to Windows 7 on a touchsmart 800 series? They implied that Win 7 apps can be used, I just wonder what will be involved in upgrading if it's possible, when the time comes. Otherwise, there's plenty to do with what is out now.

P.S. I didn't realize you have a Slingbox community too. I'll have to check that out.

While you never know, I (IMO) seriously doubt you'll see a new TouchSmart announced in January. If they did, it would probably be a refresh of the IQ500 series given that the 800 series is so new .

Given that Microsoft is basically using the TouchSmart 500 and 800 series as the showcase platform for Windows 7, I'd put my money on an easy upgrade when the final product actually ships.

(That's my opinion anyway, but I've been proven wrong in the past).

Yep, I've also managed the Sling Community website since the Slingbox first hit the scene in 05. If you're a Slinger, you definitely need to get involved there. Check it out at http://www.slingcommunity.com

Yep. You sure can. That's exactly how I get HDTV in my kitchen on my TouchSmart.

What you'll need:

  1. Slingbox PRO-HD
  2. SlingPlayer 2.0 client
  3. High definition source (cable box, aerial antenna, hd satellite box, etc).

I LOVE THE IQ816 & THE TX2 LAPTOP !BUT.......
1)I DONT LIKE THE TX2 TOUCHSMART SOFTWARE (I LIKE THE TOUCHSMART SOFTWARE ON THE ALL-IN-ONE IQ816 BETTER)AND 32 BIT?( WHAT IS THAT).
2) I REALLY WANT BOTH BUT I GUESS ILL WAIT FOR WINDOWS 7 AND BETTER PROCESSOR'S.
3) I THINK A WHITE OR SILVER ONE WOULD GO BETTER IN MY HOUSE AND OR KITCHEN.

OTHERWISE THE TOUCHSMART IS THE BEST COMPUTER IVE EVER SEEN !!!!!!!!!

I don't have a cable jack in my kitchen, and my cable box is located in my living room. So, I needed an alternate way to get television to my TouchSmart (at least until I find the time to pull some coax to my kitchen and install a jack). The Slingbox solves this problem, allowing me to watch and control my living room cable box over my home wireless network. The PRO-HD does it in high-def.

For those with an aerial connection, cable jack, or dedicated cable/sat box in the location of their TouchSmart wouldn't need something like a Slingbox to accomplish this.

Follow?

I thought I would need the Slingbox, as the Touchsmart does not have an HDMI or Component input. How would I connect a HD cablebox directly to the Touchsmart?

I don't see any way to connect a cable box directly (in HD), without using some third party USB capture devices (and even then it may not work all that well).

Interestingly enough, I looked over the specs, and it didn't say if the built-in tuner on equipped models is Clear QAM capable... only over-the-air ATSC. That would mean no HD from cable without a box and accessories, or a solution like the Slingbox.

I just bought an iq816 and stumbled on this thread while puzzling out a poor (television) picture quality problem. I've got the iq816 connected via RF to a small-footprint, non-HD Comcast digital STB and I've learned that my horrible picture seems to be due to resolution and upscaling. OK, makes sense. (The STB only has composite and RF output; I tried a RCA-to-S-video adapter and Y cable for the audio and got no video signal, so I guess I'm stuck with RF at the moment.)

So if I bite the bullet and get a honkin' HD STB from Comcast, am I understanding you correctly in that I won't be able to connect it to the TouchSmart via HD-capable cabling and I'll still have a crappy upscaled picture?

This makes no sense to me so I must be missing something. Why market it as an HD unit and not provide HD connection(s)?

I'm planning to wall-mount the iq816 in my very small kitchen, where I already have a cable jack in place. I'm trying to avoid the huge HD STB and was willng to forgo true HD programming to accomplish that, but I can't live with the current horrible upscaled picture. I guess I could HD STB/Slingbox something in a another room but that's a pretty costly solution, and how's the speed over a wireless LAN? We've already got an X-Box and two other computers on-line.

Matt, I think I read somewhere that it is QAM capable.

As for the next touchsmart, I saw a little blurb about something called the TX9000. Looks like HP is giving one away to entice developers to come up with some innovative touch programs.

Woohoo! I won my Touchsmart!

I think that's the dx9000. It's the business edition of the IQ800 series. Pretty much the same hardware, just slightly re-packaged for businesses.

Ahhhhhh! Thanks! I looked it up in the consumer touchsmarts and couldn't find it.

When you browse partsurfer.hp.com or the Touchsmart Live Chat product list you see the next TouchSmart series listed. They are going to be Touchsmart 300 and Touchsmart 600. Rumors hold that the 300 series is only 20" big wheras the 600 series is supposed to come in 23". They will be smaller but, from what I've heard, also considerably cheaper.

Now it is also on Engadget:

TouchSmart 300: 20"

TouchSmart 600: 23" with smaller resolution then iq8xx and without blue-ray

If you really wanna go big, buy the iq820 as long as you can and upgrade to Win7 after October 22.

So will the Touchsmart 3.0 software on these new models be different. I just purchased a IQ526 and need to know what my options are. Read somewhere it was not true Multi-touch technology but Window 7 would allow Multi-Touch.

What does that mean? Will it work better with Windows 7? I was going between the Dell Studio 19 and HP. I heard the IQ526 will take advantage of the full touch abilities once 7 is installed.

October 1, 2009 9:36 PM

Looking at the leaked image, the TouchSmart 3.0 software will be different, at least visually. Since NextWindow has been working on Windows 7 beta drivers that enable dual-touch, it's pretty safe to assume that the IQ526 will have Windows 7 drivers downloadable that enable dual-touch once the release date comes around (Oct 22 or so.) I don't think you'll be disappointed with your IQ526 if/when you upgrade to Windows 7.

I just got an iq820 (i needed it bigger then 23). I installed Windows 7 Ultimate from scratch(got the .iso from Technet Plus). Meaning I installed a new, bigger HDD (1.5TB), inserted the Windows7 DVD (Ultimate 64bit) and did a normal installation. Everything worked fine without any additional drivers. For Aero and Multitouch, though, I only had to install the Graphic Drivers (the ones HP provides for Vista 64bit work fine) and the latest Touch Driver from NextWindow (is not Beta anymore). As DIVADZIGNS says, Windows Vista offers no Multitouch support. With Windows 7, you can control everything by touch and gestures, not just Touchsmart Apps. Even the new MediaCenter Software is completely touch controlled. With Multitouch you can zoom, scroll, context menu etc.
