Nice that they added HDMI and composite, but not nice that they reduced the screen sizes. 23" is the max compared to the current 26" If you can upgarde the TS software, I'd be tempted to get a leftover IQ800-series and upgrade. The ports are nice but I'd rather have the screen real estate.

If HP blocks out owners of the 500 and 800 series on the new software, there will be hell to pay, given the problems we've all dealt with to troubleshoot this product. (My 800 series restarts randomly at least 5 times a day!)
I do admit, however, the addition of the HDMI and composite inputs makes me super jealous too.

Better go get an IQ800 while you can, then. Once they're gone, that's it.
I agree,
I just checked HP.co.uk website and both 600 and 300 are already there. Nothing really spectacular.

Regarding the new software. Something was mentioned in the press release (http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press/2009/091013xc.html)
"Customers with previous TouchSmart PC models who upgrade to Windows 7 through the HP Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program will receive software with some of these new touch applications."
And for the people who have asked for second display connections, you can get that with the "business" edition, the 9100; it has a DVI output option.
I'm not usually a pessimist, but I honestly doubt we'll see the new Touchsmart software made available to users of the 500 and 800 series. With "non-technical" issues preventing the release of even the most recent software update, I can only imagine what kind of technical/legal/financial problems might arise to prevent HP from releasing a much more substantial redesign. And who knows? Maybe the Touchsmart "3.0" software is just as flawed as the current software suite.
I realize my comment comes off as a bit petulant, and admittedly I am...though my machine has been relatively stable since purchase (and I hope I am not tempting fate here by saying it), many users have paid upwards of $1500 for a computer that can't run without crashing, hard freezing, or even allowing the user to operate the software it was advertised to run. Because of the Touchsmart software suite's numerous bugs, lack of features, and drain on system resources, I haven't even run the software since the first week I got my machine (back in January of 08.) To be honest, even if HP did release Touchsmart "3.0" or the delayed update, I'm not sure I would bother trying to use it.
P.S. to GeekTieGuy: I do appreciate that you took the time to give us what information you could about the delay of the Touchsmart update, and also all the hard work you do around here to help us Touchsmart users with our problems. The quotes around "non-technical" are not intended to be a dig at you-- just your employer :)
I know. Thanks!
Let's see what happens, shall we? I don't think we'll know anything for sure until October 22 is here. Perhaps a week or so after that. Lining up ducks and all that.
But I do think there was a dig at the software in there, which is partly a dig at me, too :)
And I'm sure even the 3.0 software will not be to everyone's taste. The basic premise hasn't changed. You're basically launching a whole bunch of programs at the same time, so that's bound to slow down the machine and eat memory. At least with the 3.0 software, the only running programs are the ones in the top row. The bottom row are just icons.

Hah, true enough. Apologies :)
I don't begrudge the Touchsmart software so much for hogging resources--it's a flashy, multipurpose suite. To be honest, I just wish it worked. The base application sometimes locks up, calendar syncing comes and goes, my settings don't stick, etc.-- if even these things were fixed, I would be happy.
As a member of the industry, I know that no one at HP *intended* for the Touchsmart line to have these problems--these things happen anyway. I just hope that instead of moving on to the next iteration of hardware/software and leaving the rest of us to our fate, HP will take the time to help early adopters get the most out of these beautiful but unfortunately flawed machines.
Agreed. No mal-intent intended to GeekTieGuy or other developers. I'm just frustrated with the hangups and slow software roll-out for fixes. I'm hoping and looking forward to potential new software that both makes the newest versions even more "sexy" as well as boosting performance and stability of the legacy systems.
I can't guarantee that all your frustrations and hangups will go away, no matter how much time and money is invested in developing new and better software. It's almost impossible to please everyone.
The slow rollouts are not going to change. Writing software takes time. And when you step back a minute and think about the amount of specialized software you get with a TouchSmart, you may appreciate (or not, I suppose) that something like that can't be refreshed every month or even every two months. There's feature prioritization, coordination, testing (a LOT, even though it doesn't catch every problem, unfortunately), packaging, deployment to the web and all kinds of other stuff that happens for a web-update to be produced.
There is an update to the 3.0 software coming out, that much is clear from the press release. Exactly what parts of the 3.0 suite will be included is not entirely clear yet (even to me.) I know that the "shell" is definitely part of it, so you should see some on that front.
I will say this much, having people around that are on the inside to help us understand how complicated the politics of this can be is always nice.
I also have to give HP a lot of credit, they've been pretty good about being "one of the good guys" they've made several promises to the MediaSmart home server community about making 3rd generation software updates available to 1st and 2nd generation users at a minimal cost with it looking to be a full OS upgrade.

DianeAgreed here too. I too am a fan of HP and root for them in the market. Agreed too on the minimal cost piece of upgrading. I'd willingly pay a small additional fee to get a large, more stable, software update. Of course this type of innovative software requires huge resources by HP and I understand that the previous versions were difficult to make trouble-free. That's why I"m hopeful that there is some way to allow those committed to their TS's to access the newer software.
I'd welcome a way for HP to offer Touchsmart users a Win7 upgrade that contains the new TS upgrades, I'd pay a reasonable fee for it, and the hardware is very similar, but I'm not holding out a ton of hope for it.

You know, that's nice to hear. Do both of you have a ballpark figure that you might be willing to part with? You can send me a Private Message if you'd rather keep it between you and me. I'm just curious at a personal level.

I think a key to this is knowing if the TouchSmart 3.0 interface requires Win7, if it does then it has to tie into a full Win7 upgrade, but I'd love to see an HP supported upgrade path to Win7 that came with everything to upgrade the OS and apps, and I can see paying around a Win7 upgrade cost, of course OEM price would be very welcome as opposed to full no discount retail.
If it can go over Vista, then I can see following what HP has done in the past, and that is a $25-$35 upgrade.

I'm willing to be a gunnea pig and see if it works on my 816. Gotta be able to show off Windows Multi Touch at my launch party next week.

Woohoo! I won my Touchsmart!
Hey, me again, sorry I've been quiet but I got a new job and stuff.. Anyway, I was having the worlds WORST problems with my iq810 and finally HP took it away to fix, it came back with a totally different BIOS software on it and it hasn't crashed once in the last 6 months! If your screen isn't bright blue when you switch it on with a colourful HP logo, ask them to update it.. Worked for me!
Thanks,
Andy

Thanks. Can you possibly share the bios #, etc so that we can all compare ours?
I just rebooted it and it said 5.10 on the splash screen, I think.. I'm updating it so I might have to reboot again, I'll try to snap an image of it;)
Can't really decide whether i buy the IQ525 latest model here in Greece sold at 1.130 euros (best price) or wait 2 months or so to buy the new IQ600/1050. Does anyone know at what price both models are sold abroad so as to compare? Never had a touch computer before and i think i will give it a try, though i wasn't thrilled from the screen's response to touch at the store. And i would like to know if there are some new info on the possibility of a free upgrade to touch software together with the upgrade to win7 which is offered for the moment. Thanks for any commnets in advance.
