MediaSmart software that comes with the TX2 TouchSmart notebook has far more extensive multitouch capabilities then TouchSmart software that comes with the IQ500 and IQ800 series all-in-ones. TX2 also has limited multitouch capabilities outside the MediaSmart shell, such as zooming in IE.

Why did HP decide to separate the two software packages, instead of upgrading TouchSmart and using it on TX2? I understand that unlike the desktops,  TX2 uses capacitance-based touchscreen, maybe it is more capable?

If the hardware differences are not the issue, will TouchSmart get the same multitouch features?

If there are no plans to introduce multitouch to the TouchSmart software, would MediaSmart run on IQ500 series?

hi there!

Yes - this is THE question!
Hopefully we'll get an answer from HP soon, before christmas is coming :-)!
I think - this (one basic software for all) should be the target. And MUTLTOUCH must be in there!

I have to agree, but the confusion doesn't end there.

I recently purchased the Touchsmart notebook (tx2-1025dx) and knew that it only came with just the media portion of the full Touchsmart application found on its desktops. The notebooks pretty much just seem to have the media slice of it and its renamed Mediasmart. It's also confusing for this site to NOT articulate this in its articles and download profiles. When reading about the spring update I was excited for a moment to see new features like a calender, notes, etc being added... but the problem is the update only works on the Touchsmart desktops, not the notebooks. Also download profiles do not state if the plug-ins will work on either Touchsmart desktop/notebooks. Its like there is an assumption that the notebooks use the same Touchsmart software - and it doesn't.

My Touchsmart Notebook (tx2-1025dx) can zoom in IE, not sure where else it doesn't work unless it requires Win 7 + its beta drivers to work nearly everywhere (which I tested). Tx2 uses an N-trig active digitizer dual screen that handles in two modes (tablet pc and multitouch) depending what is closest to the screen (fingers or stylus). It is intersting that you feel Mediasmart is a superior application, because from what I see it is missing many components that the desktop Touchsmart application has.

Hi TC,

I'll give the quick answer.  The Touchsmart Community site was originally intended for the Touchsmart line of all in one PC's.  Apparently some google searches brought the Touchsmart laptop owners here as well and for a while the discussion forums intermingled.  Some confusion ensued and Matt, the site admin added a section for the TX notebook.  So, things are evolving.  With the TS community comprised of mostly the AIO TS owners, most of the discussion has centered around them however the Laptop discussion is growing rapidly and I hope that as it becomes more popular (hopefully in a good way) newer members will bring more info and experience with them and current members will be able to share their collective experiences.

I also post quite frequently over at www.gottabemobile.com and they have a pretty good number of posts related to the TX2.  I either get my info from there or refer people to posts over there in my effort to get a good database of posts going here.  Since most of my experience is with the TS AIO I have to search for info related to the laptop.  I do have a TX2500z which is similar so I use some of that experience as well.

Hang in there, we'lll start learning more about the TX laptops.

I agree too, that if HP was going to give them the Touchsmart brand, then they should have kept the software base the same.  Makes too much sense.
