Have you checked the HDD fitting? If I were you I would take off the back cover and check if the cables are fitted well.

I've been using an IQ506 for about a year and a half, have diligently updated all drivers when available, updated the system BIOS to 5.10, udpated the Seagate firmware, etc. and all has been well. After upgrading to Windows 7 Pro, my computer's BIOS will sporadically forget that the HD is attached. When I run BIOS Setup, sometimes it sees the HD, but most times (just started in last few days), it only sees the DVD drive. Any thoughts on what to check? When the sytem does see the HD, Windows 7 loads normally (though it appears to be a tad sluggish from the beta I tested). Note that I restored the computer back to Vista 64 and reupdated all drivers BEFORE I installed the Win 7 Pro Upgrade. I had no issues with the HD when using Win 7 Beta. I realize it is not a Win 7 issue, but the problem has just started happening after installing Win 7. What would cause the drive to sometimes appear then disappear (apparently at random)?
Here's the breakdown:
IQ506
Product # KQ437AA-ABA
Build 83NAv6XrA5
BIOS 5.10
Core version 08.00.14
The Seagate Barracuda drive was updated to HP26 when the firmware came out. When I ran the BIOS update (directly from Seagate website this morning, it inidicated no update was needed).
Thanks in advance!
Tim

Haven't tried opening yet...had heard not so easy on the 506 (something about special screws, but I found the info on how to open it). Assuming that all is well with seating and cables, what next?
Okay, I opended reseated cables (on drive and mother board), though they didn't appear loose. I rebooted. Windows 7 loaded....and loaded...and loaded....and then blue screen of death. When system rebooted, the HD was no longer seen by the BIOS....hard drive failing???
Possible. Since you upgraded the firmware already that's almost the only thing left. Or maybe the controller on the motherboard is going bonkers. Hard to tell.
GeekTieGuy,
I must say that I am impressed with HP's tech support. I e-mailed them about the problem. They asked me to do all of the things I already had done and also determined the HD was bad...they shipped me a new one for next day delivery and I'm back in business...
Hey Tim,
Thanks for your comment. It's always nice to hear when people have a good experience with support. Usually we only hear about bad experiences, which is only natural, so your perspective is a welcome one.
