By now you probably have seen multitouch capabilities of TouchSmart series in demos posted all over YouTube by 3rd party developers. Hardware is obviously there, so when are we going to get the software support from HP? I understand that support for every application out there MIGHT be a stretch on HP developers' respources, but at least give us multitouch browsing and picture/image apps. TX2 with Media Smart was the first step ahead i suppose, but multitouch can place the SmartTouch WAY ahead of competitors' offers. As you can see,

NextWindow did it

http://www.youtube.com/v/XXrcaAid1ss&hl

Fingertapps did it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=na_32BJCSbk

Canineinteractive did it

http://www.youtube.com/v/Ks10Y7BVfRs&hl

Other developers pitched in as well

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEvAwmS7Ysg

I understand there's a lot of money in selling it to corporate customers before all us peons get our share, but I would imagine it would be within HP's financial abilities and defenitely in line with their development strategy to offer something similar off-the-shelf in the entire TouchSmart lineup.

iPhone's Safari and Picture viewer are still lightyears ahead of other systems out ther in terms of usability and the "WOW" factor.

Oh and BTW multitouch gesture support in Windows 7 is mediocre at best according to the demos. We need mind-blowing interaction experience as displayed in the demos above!

Have you looked at the development guidelines you can download from this site? There's information about multi-touch in there.

Also, have you seen this? http://www.nextwindow.com/support/application_notes/api.html

Thanks for the links.

Even though I am not a developer at this point, considering recent availability of the iPhone SDK and now Touchsmart HDK as well as my fascination with the multitouch technology, I might be getting on board shortly.

I did read the developers guidelines. It does estlish some commands for multi-touch it seems, but only within the Smart Touch interface.

As far as the NextWindow link, are you saying they did use ther own display overlay as opposed to sdjusting their software to HP's hardware? I considered this unlikely, why wouldnt they use any other regular monitor if that was the case?

The touch screen in the HP TouchSmart is based on NextWindow's technology. I'm guessing (but I don't know for sure) that some of the YouTube videos you pointed to were done using the NextWindow APIs.

oic
will have to research further. After looking at NextWindow USB add-ons, tt does seem plausible
especially considering that Windows 7 beta driver is posted on their website specifically for TouchSmart

Here is the response I received from NextWindow on Gesture Server multitouch suppoprt app demoed in this video http://www.youtube.com/v/XXrcaAid1ss&hl

"Gesture Server will work on Vista and will work on Windows 7
when released. It is not clear at this stage what is proposed in regards
to pricing of the gesture server as yet but I think at this stage it
will be a separate entity to hardware"

Hope it comes out soon!

Hi everyone!

I found this forum a few days ago while searching for reviews on touchsmart PC's because I am buying one for my dad and I wanted to make sure it wasnt some POS that just looked cool.

I realize the touchsmart software leaves something to be desired, and that isnt why I am buying the touchsmart anyway, The touch features will still work in windows so thats all that matters.

I am wondering if anyone of you in this topic that are talking of multitouch, know if the IQ507 will work with the NextWindow Multitouch driver for Windows 7?

They list the models IQ504, IQ506, IQ804 and IQ816 as compatible with it, but I hdidnt see the IQ505 or IQ507 on the list. Do these 2 models use different touch panels?

I have a legitament beta copy of Windows 7 Build 7000 64 bit that I would like to try on the TS since ive read that 7 has lots of touch features. and as far as HP's support, Im willing to void the warranty. I know how to fix pretty much anything that has to do with software/hardware for PC's, and half the problems Ive read from people using the TS are most likely their own doing. (Usually is)

Let me know! And regardless of the answer Im still looking forward to this Touch based PC which is less than 9 days away:D!

The 507 and 505 use the same technology for the touch part of the screen as all the other models, so they should work with the Windows 7 beta drivers the same way the other models do.

Multitouch is definately going to gain a lot of traction once Windows 7 gets further along as support for it is built straight into the OS and it's going to be a lot easier to program for. It's not just the multitouch gesture support in Windows 7 that's attractive - it's the fact that there's a common API that allows you to program for multiple touch inputs in an easy way.

The problem right now is that each multitouch device (Touchsmart, Dell Tablet etc) have their own API's/processes to develop for multitouch, so it's not as easy as it should be to develop apps that will run across all manufacturers machines. However once Windows 7 and the .net framework 4.0 are released, it's going to be a heck of a lot easier to develop applications that will work on any Windows multitouch device - something that isn't easy right now. I think as the year moves on and into next year, we're going to see many more developers working on multitouch applications and they'll be a lot more common.

Personally, I have a specific project in mind that I want to develop, but I'm waiting for the first beta release of the .net framework 4.0 which has the multitouch API's in there before I start properly. I imagine many other devs are doing the same thing.

Richard.

I'm working on an interactive timeline using WPF/Expression Blend. It would be nice to have a well-developed multi-touch API to use in the near future.

Thank you Geektieguy,

That is pretty much all I wanted to know. I am assuming NextWindow didnt have the 505 and 507 on their requirement list because those 2 models replace the 504 and 506? and the PDF document from their site is probably out of date.

The driver for windows 7 wasnt called Gesture, so I dont know what it is, When I get the TS I will let you guys know. Im going to Circuit City tomorrow to see if they have the TS there for clearence (Due to their unfortunate demise in the US)

Thanks again TieGuy!

^ i would recommend spending a few bucks extra and going through BB/Staples/any other retailer that offers replacement coverage and is planning to stay in business.

not trying to be negative, but I already had and fully expect having a few issues with my system before all the kinks are settled, and i do not plan to rely on HP's tech support.

That said, it is still one sexy 'puter and you'll love it
