Slowly I have been getting my TS into a shape of my liking.  It still doesn't go to sleep reliably (until I do something in the Power Options control panel), frequently fails to relink to my wireless network after restarts/sleeps (which can be a real bear with as many Windows update patches come through that require a restart), and I hate how it shifts and resizes all of my windows after going into the screensaver mode that fades/pans pictures (why does it need to change screen rez to show pix?).

My biggest blunder to date with this thing is getting a dvd jammed in the slot drive.  Eventually, I managed to extract the disc after much tugging and invoking the manual eject hole, but I wonder if this is pretty much the end of the disc drive of this kind of construction (super slim profile, slot drive).  Is it pretty much pulled out of alignment where it comes to the motor hub and any related loading/ejection mechanism?  I'm pretty hesitant to ever put another disc in there again (should I have to go through the tortuous manual extraction process all over again), and when I loaded that disc it made a bunch of dragging noises as the drive attempted to spin it (unsuccessfully).

So are these kinds of drives pretty much toast after the first instance of a really hard jam?

What model Touchsmart are you using? I have a IQ846 and have had some dvd issues. First the eject button stopped working, I opened the system as directed by HP and reset the drive. It worked for a while and then it went crazy a few days later and it engaged the eject moter over and over as if it had turrets syndrome. I left it on over night and come morning the system was not engaging the eject motor but the eject button is not working anymore.

I am thinking about opening the case again and reseting the drive but I don't want it to start up the eject craziness again.

Smile, God is watching you.

I am on an IQ505. I have opened up the case, as well (though, I didn't really need to in the end considering what I actually had to do that got the disc free).

How do you "reset" the drive? I have not heard of this procedure.

I have not previously had much trouble with slot-drives up until this point (but that has been all Mac hardware in the past). Now that I have encountered these troubles, I am compelled to curse how vulnerable the slot-drive design is to trouble. Maybe it is just my luck, but I'm tellin' ya, up to this point, I would have bet the farm that there is no reliability/durability problem with slot-drive designs.
