Often network activity can cause a computer to wakw from sleep mode. Try going to the device manager and double clicking on your network adapter, goto the Power Management tab and removing the check next to Allow this device to wake the computer. It could be that.
Does anyone has issues with the Sleep Mode? i am forced to use Monitor Off function instead of Sleep, because every time i send it into sleep mode with the remote or the button on the top left corner of the keyboard, it goes to sleep for a little while, but immidiately wakes up for no apparent reason. I tried tuning the mouse off, making sure the screen is completely free of dust as not to trigger a touch screen action, and turning off my Windows Live messanger. None of these seem to rectify the issue.
^exactly what it was, good call! Not sure why would it be set to "Allow" by default. Issue rectified.
I'm having the same problem. Put it to sleep and as soon as it sleeps, it wakes up again. My touchsmart has a bad case of insomnia.

I had the same problem, could not understand it until one night sat in from of the black screen it happened. A tiny insect landed on the screen and it flicked into life. I sat and watched it jump to different areas of the screen and it even opened links. My advice is keep the room secure and get a good fly spray.
Nope, no bugs in my room. It wakes up immediately after going to sleep. Was going to try to "hibernate" but that feature is not listed in the shutdown menu. I read a technet article about hibernate not being available...will have to look it up and fix it.

My Touchsmart wakes up as a result of IR interference from my TV remote control. I bet that's what's happening.

Nope...
Its in my home office - turned media hub - but no IR devices that would interfere. At first thought it may be my Logitech MX3000 Mouse running through a USB dongle in the rear hiddden USB ports (behind the plastic cover) but then I thought back and remembered that it did the same thing with the HP mouse too. My workaround was to enable hibernation and use it for now. Also turned off the ambient lighting and went with a blank screen saver for when it does turn itself on.

Yes, I have the same problem with the computer waking up from sleep. It's a waste of energy and is extremely annoying. Tried talking to HP people for several times, they told me to do different things but still cannot resolve the problem. They told me to recover my computer as the last step, but it is a pain to do. Any help is appreciated!
It will also allow the shared media drives to wake the computer up. Make sure that is disabled in your network settings. I cant remember specifically how I found it, but it was definitely under the network settings somewhere. My comp will go to sleep for 3-4 hours and then wake up so I am still trying to figure that part of it out.
I know you guys don't believe me, but without fail, my Touchsmart wakes up from sleep when I adjust the volume on the remote control for my Sony stereo system, using a DirecTV universal remote. It's highly reproducible.

Yep, it sure is. I believe the IR sensor on your touchsmart is getting the IR signal from the remote and wakes up.

Thanks for all the replies. I have investigated all the possibilities but none work. My computer would wake up by itself when no one is in the room, so the IR sensor isn't the problem. I will definitely try the shared media option. However, I am putting some thoughts into returning the computer. There are just too many small bugs in the computer.
I subscribe to several tech newsletters (which is where I get a lot of my answers from that I post here) but in this weeks "Vista News" I noticed something that may be of help to all of us who have Touchsmarts with insomnia. The article pertained to wireless mice and keyboards waking up PC's from sleep/hibernate. Heres a snippet about how to make the changes to prevent it from happening. I'm going to give it a try after I finish taking some online exams tonight.
How to set your wireless mouse or keyboard not to wake the computer
Last week, we printed a link to a KB article regarding reasons your computer may wake up immediately when you put it to sleep. Reader David L. wrote to say that he discovered his wireless mouse was causing the problem, and offered this solution for fixing it:
Click Start | Control Panel | Mouse
Click the Hardware tab
Click the Properties button
Pm the General tab, click the Change Settings button
Click the Power Management tab
Uncheck the box that says "Allow this device to wake the computer."
Click OK in all the dialog boxes to close them

OK, I got impatient and gave it a try and it slept...for about a minute. So, I got curious and went to the event viewer and this is what I found:
Sleep Time: 2009-02-22T23:05:21.554143400Z
Wake Time: 2009-02-22T23:06:10.885136400Z
Wake Source: Device -Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.2)
Ahhhhaaaaa! Its my network card! (of course that was suggested by Target in the post above) I'm going to change its settings to prevent it from waking up and see what happens.
EDIT: The combination disabling the wake events for the mouse and the LAN card seemed to have worked. I let the TS sit for a few minutes and it stayed asleep. Moved the mouse...nothing. Tapped the space bar and it woke up.
This seems to work which is good so I don't have to shut it down every night.

Actually I have used a wired mouse since I don't like the wireless mouse that came with HP. So, that wouldn't be the problem. When my computer wakes up by itself, in the event viewer, the log states the source is "RTC" - per HP techs, it's a wake up program.
If I'm not mistaken RTC is "Real Time Clock" which would indicate a timed or scheduled event is waking up the PC. Possibly something like a virus scan, calendar event or email program scheduled to check for new messages.
RTC events can also be set in the bios and would be certain events that are set to wake the computer.
Are you connected wirelessly or via your wired connection? If wireless, try changing the settings in your woreless adapter to prevent from waking from sleep.
