I know there are so many aritcles about how to get the touchscreen ntrig driver to work on Karmic Koala. But , alas, i am a noob to Ubuntu, so alot of the stuff they are talking about i do not understand. I get how to open the terminal and plug in the code but some of there comment/directions outside of just writing down the code, i don't get or understand because of my lack of experience in doing so. I'm not looking to learn really quick. I just want a simple, idiots guide to installing it. I am dual booting Windows 7 (first intalled) and Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop. I loved the touch screen, Please help.

Would love to know this as well. DO not go to the forums though because they are a bunch of Elitists that will belittle you just for asking this question.

I will look around and see that I can do to help us both out.

There are three main parts that you need to get the touchscreen to work in Karmic:

  1. Patch the hid-ntrig kernel module
  2. Patch the linuxwacom X driver
  3. Configure the touchscreen

If you  can let me know whether you are using the 32 or 64 bit version of Ubuntu along with posting the result of the following command from the Terminal:

ls -l /dev/input/by-path

I can help you find the guides/packages you need to install and make it work.  As for the Ubuntu Forums, not all are elitists.  The ones that have been assisting with the TX2 laptops are pretty friendly and will not try to belittle you.  Favux is very kind and does a great job with helping people get the touchscreen configuration set up in Ubuntu.  I can be found there also under the username of Ayuthia.

NOTE:  If you are using the newest Windows 7 firmware from this link:

http://www.touchsmartdevzone.com/forum/thread/1985/Official-HP-N-Trig-driver-...

The touch portion will not work because the firmware reports the touch information differently.  I have been able to create a patch to make it work, but it is not quite happy yet and it will also require a different X driver.

Thanks!  Not all are that bad.  I do know what you are talking about though.  There are some that have been around too long and have forgotten how difficult it is to start with an operating system that  is completely foreign to them.  They have also forgotten that there are so many guides out there that can completely confuse a person.  I will also admit that I tend to get too technical at times too, but have no problems with people telling me that it made no sense.

I have created this page for you:

http://linuxfans.keryxproject.org/?page_id=66

However, please check to see if you have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file  If you do, please post it and I can make the modifications for you.  If you don't have that file, then the guide should work.

If something is not clear, please don't hesitate to ask.  Sorry I couldn't create the .deb files for the wacom driver for you.  I have to learn how to do that so that we don't always have to build the packages.

Download this file for your xorg.conf:

wget  http://linuxfans.keryxproject.org/packages/wacom/xorg.conf

sudo cp xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf

You can do this as the last step.

Sorry about that.  I forgot to add the version number.  Please try:

cd wacom-tools-0.8.4.1/linuxwacom

instead.  I have updated the documentation to reflect it now.  Thanks for pointing it out.

You might try going to the Terminal and run alsamixer.  Check and see if the Master, PCM, and Front jacks are turned up and that the Master is not muted (it will show as MM instead of 00 at the bottom of the volume meter).  To exit out of alsamixer, just press the escape key.

You might be able to do the same through the GUI volume control in the system tray also.

If that does not work, can you post the last three lines of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf just to verify that it is correct?

One other question (not directly related to the sound issue), which version of Ubuntu are you using (32 or 64 and Kubuntu or Ubuntu)?   I just want to know so that I can make sure that I have a copy of that LiveCD.  I have always been a 64-bit KDE user and have found that some issues are related to Gnome or 32-bit so if I find others that are using them, I try to keep a copy on my system if I have the space.  So far, I have only found one person that has installed the 32-bit version of Karmic and the rest have been 64-bit.

Can you describe how it is glitchy?  Also, can you tell me which version of the N-Trig firmware you are using?  You will have to check that in Windows 7 under the Device Drivers if I recall correctly.  If you are not sure, how many fingers can you use in Paint (4 or 2 fingers)?
