Is there a plan to set up an App Store, or have some sort of a paid application distribution system for HP/3rd party TouchSmart applications? it would be nice to have free apps in the download section of this site for everyone's use, but let's be honest, financial incentive would encourage innovation. I'd hate to fall back on iPhone for comparison again, but look what AppStore is doing for Apple. In case of both iPhone and TouchSmart, applications are simple enough to be written by a single developer or a small group, as opposed to today's Windows games and applications which almost HAVE to be handled by large software outfits. In both cases, literally new categories of applications appear that never existed before because the devices are so unique from the competitor's offers and feature capabilities never present prior on this class machines. I spent a nice chunk of money in .99c-$7 increments for my iPhone, I'd gladly pay a small fee for Touch Smart apps I find useful. Prior to that it has been quite a while since I paid for non-bundled software (using "evaluation" editions coughcough), but low pricing of apps in conjunction with convenience of instant gratification made me hand out my credit card to the fruit company and open up a tab. So I do not see a reason same scheme would not work for TouchSmart (except possibly smaller pool of consumers, which should jack app pricing up slightly) I did not see anything in the SDK expressly prohibiting charging money for applications, but i think centralized distribution system thorugh HP would improve convenience and security security, as well as channel part of the money stream back towards HP. Ok so perhaps im oversimplifying things, but what are your thoughts?

if HP does not get behind it and build the distribution channel / "app store" portal, advertise etc, it just aint gonna happen. Developers need to make money for their efforts. No app store traffic / mass public interest, no money.

No money, no good 3rd party apps.

My viewpoint is a little different. As we have many app-store floating around (like http://www.swreg.org/) Developers can just add their applications to any of these places and contact HP to showcase them. If HP doesn't not entertain; this forum might be a great place to market them considering rapidly increasing member-base of this portal. Though I agree, if HP launches app store, It will give a little more convenience to developers.

JMHO... This will never gain traction unless HP leads the charge and dumps a lot of money into advertising and getting the typical consumer on board (similar to what Apple did). Ideally, HP should put an "HP AppStore" widget into the TS UI with list of new apps / hot apps and ability to download / buy directly through the "HP AppStore" widget. Developers can post directly to the store, get feedback, reviews etc.

Developers going out and posting apps is going to net "0" in return- HP has to build the "community" and then tell the typical consumer what to buy, where to go, and why it is cool.

on the above note... take the "Internet TV" TS app, which is supposed to be a cool YouTube viewer. I think it is great that someone took time out of their own busy day to create it, however... it is very notchy, doesn't even say YouTube on it, and needs more finish work. Do you think the developer has any incentive to fix it? Will the average consumer who installs this app be pleased with it, due to it's bugs and lack of fit and finish? Heck- Will the average consumer even be able to find the app to install it in the first place?? ;p

I would happily buy apps for the Touchsmart. Particularly ones like Vudu, Amazon VOD, CBS, NBC, ABC, MTV etc.

I use PlayOn and they have a lot of support for 3rd party apps like these but this is a media server for game consoles. One thought is to just ask PlayOn to make a Touchsmart app that you can use directly on the Touchsmart interface with no console needed.
