Hi ALL,

I would like to ask some questions regarding my touchSmart TX2 1015EA

1) Is it possible to replace the RM74 with a faster AMD CPU ?

2) what is the fastest CPU I can get for this machine (link id possible) ?

3) do I have to replace the heatsink/fan Etc if I replace the CPU ?

4) is there a service manual to disassemble the TX2 please ?

Thanks very much

best regards to all

It *should* be possible to upgrade the CPU.
I will quickly say that I dont know this for sure however since I dont know the motherboard for this unit and if its the same as the tx2-z revisions, and unsure if the BIOS officially supports that CPU.

The highest version of the ZM processors that I know of currently is the ZM-87.
CPU part number TMZM87DAM23GG

You would not have to replace the heatsync (Need good thermal paste re-applied however, clean all the old stuff off the heatsync)

It would appear that HP removed their access for users to access 90% of the service manuals and video guides a month ago.... go go HP..... Someone else might have one floating around however.

Replacement mobile CPU's are typically fairly expensive items, are you sure you want to drop the money on that?

Hey! You two seem to be the droids I'm looking for, and I'm in dire need of some help. Can you please point me in the right direction as to where I can find a stock replacement processor for the Touchsmart tx2? Nowhere I've checked seems to have them, nor any other compatible chips. The chip in mine died and I'm ready to replace it myself to solve the dreaded blinking keyboard lights problem :)

Thanks so much in advance!!!

iomegaman, I am in the same boat. Yesterday I got the blinking lights on my tx2-1012nr and I would like replace the CPU, with an upgrade if possible

I went through this about a month ago and thought I'd share the knowledge. Star Micro has plenty of cheap Turion CPUs:

I got one that was bad, but they were good about the RMA as long as I requested it in 10 days. I also recommend some IC7 diamond thermal compound... dropped my temps 7 degrees C when compared with Artic Silver 5. The best price I could find was $7 with free shipping:

Once you get to the processor, I highly recommend that you also swap out the squishy shim for a copper one off ebay and use the thermal compound on both sides. Anything between .5mm and .8mm will be fine:
http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-F500-F700-TX1000-TX2000-Heatsink-Copper-Pad-Shim-/1705...

Lastly, be very careful with the keyboard and mouse ribbon clips cause they break. Just lift em up and the ribbon will release.

P.S. Hunka Tunka, I got an error for a bad processor too, but it ended up being my motherboard. Same blinking lights in a pattern of three (processor per HP's error codes) but the new processor didn't solve this. there are plenty of threads about blinking caps on TX2s on the web.

The blinking lights is northbridge/igp solder failure. The only fix is complain to the BBB about the TX2 being defective (which it is), or to 'reflow' the chip yourself. I suggest you complain to the BBB, if enough 'blinking lights' 'black screen' people complain there may be a reacall.

Btw, the blinking 'code' is useless. It has nothing to do with the cpu. I thought it did and wasted money on a cpu when it was a northbridge/igp problem.

s_rouault, quit spamming all these threads to rally your cause to complain to BBB. I understand you're upset, but it's simply off topic for this thread.

Also, in response to the poster request, here's a link to the HP service manual with step-by-step instructions for upgrading the cpu:
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01655860.pdf

This is what I followed when upgrading from RM72 to the ZM85 cpu. I couldn't find any ZM87s, which is the fastest CPU that was offered by HP with the TX2z. Most benchmarks have the 85 as performing faster than the 86 so I went with it. Any of the ZM processors use some Athlon K10 architecture so they will outperform most of the other models that utilized K9 only architecture.

I shouldn't have replied to this thread with that response.. I must have confused this one with another one. But yea the CPU can be replaced with another S1G2 cpu. They are hard to find, but I found the Ultra version of the 2.2 that was in mine, so now I have a cpu with a little more cache even though I didn't need it..
