I find the default monitor brightness too much so lower it with the function keys. Problem is the setting I leave it on doesn't persist after reboot - intermittently it just resets itself to full on stare-into-the-sun brightness. Am I doing something wrong or is it yet another HP D'oh! moment?

(PS wasn't sure if this is a hardware or software thing so please forgive the cross post).

I have the same issue with my IQ816. Did you ever get an answer to this question?

By default the power config is set to balanced which reduces the screen brightness. It seems that both Vistra and Windows 7 think the touchsmart are laptops. Go into the power configuartion control panel and choose "show additional plans" and choose "High performance". In addition to the brightness, you will also notice a slight overall speed improvement.

I also noticed this problem when I started to use the TS full time yesterday. I had to go to Control Panel, then Hardware and Sound, then Power Options. You then click on "Adjust Display Brightness" and either set the brighness, click OK and exit, or tweak EVERYTHING from the Advanced link. This will stay put after you come back from Standby, Logoff, Restart, whatever.

Tried adjusting power options and display settings. Brightness still resets to approximately 75%

I actually found full brightness to be too much for me and keep it set at around 70% now. I do however, have my touchsmart on a desk and it is quite close to me.

You have to go through all the clicks as I stepped by step in my last post, and save a profile by going over to the sidebar on the left of the "Power Options" window you are in, and click on "Create a power profile", mine stays at 32% or where ever I set it at, it's saved as a file on the disk. The brightness goes up in "octaves" every 8% you adjust it, so there is no difference between 39% and 28%. The brightness only responds at multiples of 8% ( 0% 8, 16, 24,32, 40, 48%,etc. ) until it goes from 96% to 100% in only a 4% increment as the last stepping of brilliance control. I'll edit that post to reflect the part about saving the settings in a new profile if need be. Sorry for the omission.

I have a same problem too in my Touchsmart 300-1058hk...

Make sure your power setting is set to "High performance". I think any other setting, including "HP Recomended" will reduce the brightness after a period of time.

Good news, the osd driver updated: "HP Keyboard, ACPI Buttons and OSDs Driver Update"
The following url can solved the problem, try it!

i have done everything that yall have suggested and my brightness resets every time it goes to sleep or is restarted. i have doen the power options and have used the funtion keys. any one else have any ideas that might help me? i have the HP touchsmart 300.

Kristine,
I went into power settings and changed the power saving brightness to 99%. So while I'm using my computer its at 100% and if it sits idle, it drops back to 99% rather than the default 50%.

Heres how: Control panel > Power Options > Choose the power settings that you are on (I'm on High performance) and select "change Plan settings". Then choose "Advanced Settings".

From there a dialog box will open. Scroll down to display and click on the + sign. For Display brightness, choose 100% and for dimmed brightness, choose 99% and then click on "apply".

You should be good to go from there.

i have done the same but left the setting at 100%,
and changed the other settings,
blank screen saver comes on after 6mins,
and display switches off after 10mins...

mine is doing the opposite of you guys (might be the same fix though)

for the last two days the screen brightness has been dimming from 100 to 0.

it used to to dim after 5 minutes and then turn the display off at 10min. now when returning to the computer and turning the display on the brightness stays at zero.

i went to power options and the settings are default so nothing has changed. just have no idea why it's doing this all of the sudden!?

Thank you very much DaveTN. You were right on. I thought my touchsmart was going bad after 1 year!

April 20, 2011 9:39 PM

mine has done the same thing since i bought it-even reformating does not do any good for the brightness. It stays bright and after I change it, it changes back to 100%by itself after it has slept or been restarted.
Has anyone figured out what to do about it. you can talk all day long about it, but that gets nothing done.
