Not on my TouchSmart it doesn't

This sounds like it should be a poll question. I suppose the answer will vary widely depending on what apps you're trying to run. Still, it could be interesting to see how people are taking to Vista 64-bit. Great suggestion Bishopthirteen!

Personally, I haven't had any issues with the 64-bit install on my TouchSmart, and everything I've wanted to run on it has worked well.

The only program I needed special installation for is a poker site/software I frequent. One email to their support team and I had a file that installed easily.

I have to say I've been pleasantly surprised that every program I used with XP has transferred well to Vista 64.

Most programs installed fine, but stability is terrible. Right our of the box, with no extra software, I had several IE crashes (64-bit) and one system freeze in the first week. Right now, with 7-10 extra applications, a codec pack and all the current updates, thing still crashes or needs to be restarted at least three times a week. Probably had to do 4 hard reboots since I bought the thing in November. Almost inclined to take it back and try another unit, but i noticed that the display models in the store are not very stable either

Sorry to hear about your crashing issues Mr. big balls squirrel, it must be a conflict issue somewhere in your particular box or everyone on this site would be screaming about it. I would be anyway.

So far I have been able to plug and play; mini DV camera pv-gs320, digi cam 1030 sw. remote hard drive lacie d2 quadra, various memory sticks and 5 different kinds and configurations of memory cards.

In XP pro I got used to using work arounds, third party software, and questionable drivers so as resource heavy as vista is the 816t seems to balance it's resources well and the convenience of vista (so far) has been worth the occasional issue that has popped up.

Now if we could just fix the nightmarish photo application things would be really shiney. I just uploaded the 90GB(!) photo/video update hoping it would add a folder tree, not for this Christmas I guess.

90 Gigabyte or megabyte?!?!?  Mine was only about 90 MEGABYTES.  Embarassed

The problem with Vista is that it uses 2 GB of #$@% RAM. Until I bought the Touchsmart I have never owned a PC with more than 1 Gig of RAM. In other words, my Touchsmart with 4 GB of RAM is still being sucked dry by Vista.

I'm sure you are right. It must have been MB.

One of the disadvantages of running a mixed 64/32 bit system is that both 32 bit software and driver as well as 64 bit software and drivers will be running at the same time. Open up task manager and look at all the duplicates. 32 bit programs are flagged with a 32 and a star.

If it was a pure 64 bit system, it would be much quicker and handle memory much better. We are getting there...slowly but surely.

So you still have 1 free Gig of RAM more then ever before in your life, savor the Gig.

I set up a user profile with nothing in the start menu using a non-vista "Theme" and "only" use apx 1.47 GB, around 1-2% cpu usage doing light work. It does make a difference when doing AV stuff.

My 816t (and yours as well I assume) has a vista experience rating of 5 which was the highest rating possible when Vista was designed, that's why it comes with 4 Gig standard, it is hardware designed for the software and I still contend it works well... but imagine how fast it would be running UNIX. Woosh! like a fast stale wind from the 90's.

Well that extra Gig would really bring the highlights out in the hookers eyes in GTA4. lol

People who have used the new Win7 beta says it uses half of the resources that Vista does.

I'm looking forward to Win 7 SP1, But by then I'll probably have Vista all sorted out for my needs.

I'll vouch for that.  At the moment on my TX2500 tablet PC (Turion X2 Ultra 2.1 gHz, 3 gigs of ram) with IE, Windows IM, Word 07 open, Im running 3% CPU and about 875MB RAM Usage.  Don't have a dual boot setup to coompare (I swap out HDD's) but from the way it "feels", it is performing quite a bit better than Vista did.  My tablet came with 3 gig free RAM upgrade and I was just going to buy a 2 gig stick to bump it up to 4 gigs but it looks like I won't have to do that.

When Win 7 64 bit version is available, I'll upgrade the RAM and take advantage of the full amount but until then, everything is working quite good.

You installed Win7 on a seperate partition? If so, did it recognize your hardware such as the wifi and video card? I have heard that win7 on a seperate partition doesn't read any of the hardware on the TS.

UPDATE: I found a site that has a list of the drivers you need for the TS. I also found that you have to have a hard line connected to access the internet to update the drivers. http://www.windows7review.com/installing-windows-7-on-hp-touchsmart-iq506/
