I've copied over my pictures and music to my TouchSmart and got it set up just the way I like it... but now I'm a little worried that I might lose my data and have to set it up all over again.

I'm also a little new to using Windows Vista... so I'm unfamiliar with what backup options are out there that are compatible with it.  I'm looking for something easy to use that will restore my system as-is in case of disaster.  Can anyone help?

I have a MediaSmart Server (MSS) that I was able to hook into my first generation Touchsmart for backups, in fact, it backs up all of my PCs in my network.

The really cool thing about the MSS is that you don't actually have to put any of your media on the TouchSmart if you don't want to.  Just put it on the MSS and access it from any of your PCs around your house including the Touchsmart, then you don't have to worry about duplication of media files and keeping duplicate folders in sync.

There's many other benefits too, which you can read about on MediaSmartHome.com.

Agreed, Windows Home Server (like the HP MediaSmart Server) is a great solution for backup and restore. Just make sure you have Power Pack 1 installed on your home server if you have the 2nd Gen TouchSmart since it runs Vista 64-bit. For more on this see Step-by-Step to Installing the Microsoft Vista 64-bit Client Software for Windows Home Server over at MediaSmartHome.com

I personally love folder share for backup to my server.

Windows has ket this in beta for like 2 years but I love it. Backup automatically, share files with others, It does it all.

Cool program suggestion. I'll have to take a peek at it. Is it anything like SyncToy?

People, I'd recommend using this duplicate file finder to deal with unnecessary files on your hard drive. It has many functions, user-friendly interface, safety options and 100% efficiency.

I have a new HP TouchSmart and am just using the program that comes with Vista to do my backups onto an external hard drive. I haven't had to restore anything, in fact, all I have done is ensure that backups are happening. How do others find Vista for doing backups?

I use the pocket media drive for my backups. I have a drive for my media and another for my backups. My software of choice is Acronis True Image.

Just realized that with my PMD, my network storage and my second 750 gig "swap drive" that I have almost 2TB of storage!!
