This could be a simple problem or a complicated one, I'm not sure(hoping simple).  The stylus on my laptop,  does it need to be charged? When I try to use it to input words or write with it, it seems that I have to touch it to the screen and just leave it there as it writes one dot at a time, if any. that doesnt work at all. It seems to be that way for selecting things too. I have to sit it(stylus) on the screen, wait and hope it catches. I dont always keep my stylus/pen in its little cubby hole. I try to remember but I don't. So yea, thats my question does it need to be charged.

ps.  how does that little button on the stylus work if it doesnt charge?

thanks

im sorry this is probably a dumb question

Not a dumb question at all. The stylus does not need to be charged, and has no battery within it. I forget the name for the technology behind it (crazy morning here at work, little sleep, no coffee) but it gets its energy from being in close proximity to the screen.

Assuming your normal touch functionality is working correctly, you could try re-installing the Digitizer drivers for your unit; I am assuming you have a tx2 series and not the older tx with the Wacom screen.

The likely cause however is that the pen itself is probably faulty. If you unit is still under warranty just contact HP and have them send you a new pen. If not, its only ~$20 for a replacement pen, so not too bad.

Thanks for your response. I've started seriously working on fixing my pen. Ok I have no idea how to tell you if I have a Wacom screen. I do have the tx2 series. Now my pen has worked a ok and isn't even used that much. The touch functionality works perfecttly fine. The pen however has even lower functionality now. It rarely brings up a cursor, highlights but not click and it does this rarely now and only when holding the button on the pen.
I have uninstalled and installed the driver from HP site, and the driver found here.No luck. I ran its self diagnostic it gives me "result code: 14".I've searched high and low(imho)and NOBODY tells you what the codes mean. N-Trig is vague as hell on the support front or really awesome and I'm not looking well. I have Vista 64 bit, and my laptop is outside its warranty period. Getting frustrated. I have no idea what could have happened to it, i haven't made any major changes, nor have I had any problems except for now.

Have you tried calibrating it under Hardware in the Control Panel?

Still thinking it might be a dead pen then. If you want to test this, see if your local Best Buy will let you bring your unit in and test using the demo-models pen for a moment just to see if it tracks on the screen okay. If it does, just order a new pen from HP's website for ~$20.

I had the same problem and it eventually got so bad that I couldn't click or draw with the pen whatsoever, regardless of the firmware version. HP sent me a new pen and it works great!

I have an HP TouchSmart Notebook. I lost the stylus and can not seem to find where to buy one online. Any ideas?

You can buy one at HP shopping:

Please be guided that the pen on the link is for the tx2 series (ntrig).

Try a new pen...I had the same problem...I thought it was a driver issue...HP sent me a new one for free bc its still under warranty. Works perfectly now...I don't even know what caused my first one to die.

Hi

The TX2 series uses N-trig Touch technology and their stylus as well. it is battery less and if you have finger touch functionality i would check that the mode is not calibrated to touch only (under control panel -> n-trig pen and touch settings) and if it isn't the problem i would contact HP for a replacement stylus.

I have been trying for weeks to obtain a replacement pen for the touchsmart tx2z. HP, the online marketplace, N-trig...all dead ends with no intelligent suggestions from support or sales. What's that all about.is my tablet a paperweight for wont of a $20 stylus? Any suggestions out there?

the same question... I found that only 516454-001 model of original HP pen fits on my tx2z 1000. but maybe other n-trig pens may be used with it? for example a pen from fujitsu q550 or htc magic pen? who knows...
