I'm looking to replace the stock DVD-RW that came in my tx2z with a blu-ray drive. I realize that the bezel won't match up, but I don't have a problem with that. Any suggestions / first hand experiences?

the bezel will indeed match any standard slimline drvie. Go for panasonic uj-210 or uj-220

Thanks! I was looking at the Panasonic drives before, but the SATA connector looks to be on the opposite side of the drive as compared to the DVD-RW that came with my tx2.

Here's a picture I found of the UJ-220:

My current drive has the connector on the left hand side instead, right underneath the yellow box on the sticker of the UJ-220.

are you sure you are looking at the correct drive side/face (up/down)?
also there is ATAPI version of the UJ-220, so you should observe this in photos (could be a photo of an ATA panasonic uj-220, not SATA)

The sticker -should- be on the top of the drive, and I can tell from the orientation of the drive that it is right side up since the indent will always be on the same side.

From looking closely at my existing drive, it appears to use Slim ATAPI rather than SATA.. but the orientation of the connector appears to be something specific to HP drives unless I am mistaken. Here is an eBay auction for my existing drive:

After some further research I found that this drive just has an adapter on it, thanks to: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/1251855.html

Could always just use an external if need be, although not as Convenient/portable I admit.

Get the UJ-220. All slimline drives are standard. Make sure you select the correct interface version. Your current tx2 plastic bezel will fit without problems.

Thanks everyone. Now I just have to set about finding the UJ-220 for sale somewhere, preferably within Canada. :)

Remember to check the interface version - there are both the SATA and ATAPI versions of the same model UJ-220

It will fit - but it wont look great.

The tx2 has a curvey bottom and the factory installed drive is consequently curved. A third party drive would not match up with the tx2 shape and would look odd.

For that reason - I would recomend an external drive.

I customised my HP tx2z with:
6GB RAM
400GB 5200rpm Hard Disk
2.4Ghz AMD Turrion Ultra x2 ZM-86
Bluetooth + Wireless N
Lightscribe DVD-RW drive

I live in the UK - But I imported my tx2 from america.

Easy to fix. You can remove the bezel from the default HP Drive and slap it on the BR One.

I ended up ordering a UJ-230. The 210 and 220s both seemed to be ATAPI only. Now the long wait for it to arrive in Canada from HK begins, hehe. I'll post pics of the bezel swap once the new drive arrives.

My first thought as well was that it would not match the bezel, however, I'd much rather have a drive with a mismatched bezel than an external drive. I noticed the clips to remove the old bezel taking off the HP adapter on the drive.

hey guys i just installed my bluray on a customized hp tx2z, it worked perfectly, it kinda lags, but i figure ill get some more ram to make things work smoothly, now if you have a sata bluray drive and a pata ide configuration on your computer, there is an easy step that you can do to change it from sata to pata. on the dvd drive that was supplied with the tx2z, there is a black bezel piece that is attached with 4 screws. now if you unscrew these screws, you will find that there is an adapter that connects the sata drive to a ide connection. you can place that sata to pata adapter on your bluray drive, and in about a minute, your in business, picture is outstanding. sound is unbelievable for the little speakers it has. if anyone has any ideas how to increase the video performance please post suggestions!!!!

yeah , it works, the only thing is that you have to shut aero down, make sure that all your programs are turned off. once thats complete, you can watch blurays from your touchsmart pc. now about the photos,. if you look on the factory dvd drive, you have to detach it from the computer, once that is done, youll see a pata connector, there is a black plate with 4 screws, when you take off the screws, youll find that there is a sata drive with a oem pata connector,. detach the connector, attach it to your new blu ray drive, start watching movies. make sure you use some sort of bluray software. hope this helps, im not gonna be able to get pics, but if you follow my instructions, you should fare well , take care
