Hi,

Anyone know how to stop the Weather application from returning to its default? I put it my local zip, it works fine for a while, but then I find it has returned to its default.

 Very annoying .....

Gerard.

Did you install the HP TouchSmart Application update from the HP website? If so, I have an idea for a possible workaround/fix.

yes installed the update. so what's your idea for a fix?

thanks in advance.

I've described the fix at length on my blog:

http://www.geektieguy.com/2008/12/17/hp-touchsmart-software-update-weather-al...

Hope the steps are clear enough to follow and that they will fix the problem for you. They did on my test system.

I have the latest upgrade. Mine is set for Santa Cruz. It doesn't keep going back to Cuppertino. Mabye it likes my zipcode?

If you put in the zip code before you upgraded, it will revert to Santa Cruz every time you restart. Try it: Set the zip code to something like Monterey, then restart the HP TouchSmart software completely (you can hold Shift+Ctrl while clicking the Close button to do that, unless you want to verify the Close button behavior in Personalize.) It should revert back to Santa Cruz.

What I don't understand is why I'm still having this same problem. I just got my TouchSmart back from HP 2 days ago. Allegedly, they reloaded everything with the newest versions while they were fixing some hardware issues. We still have all the same software issues we had when it went in.

While the advice and help is appreciated, people shouldn't have to go through these hoops to get HP software to work properly. What about all those people who are frustrated and didn't think to check the forum?

The fix in your blog was simple to do and worked well.

Thanks.

I hear you on the hoops and issues. I hate to say it so bluntly, but we're all only human. No matter how many safeguards, processes and people you put into testing and creating products, mistakes will slip through. Once they're out, it takes a while for the feedback to reach the developers, and then the issue has to be identified, a fix devised, the fix prioritized with all the new things that have been slated for implementation while the feedback wasn't there yet. Then the fix has to actually be produced, tested and put in the field and into any new versions that may already be in development.

I only say this to give you a little visibility into what goes on behind the curtain, not to excuse anything. Of course, I still apologize for the inconvenience caused by the issue.

My guess is people who don't check the forum might call HP support and hopefully they'd get a pointer to the workaround or, even better, a walkthrough.

I had a little different problem. The weather app. was showing Cupertino as others did, but it would not allow me to change it at all. You could type in a new city or zip, but it would not give you an option to change the setting. I tried the workaround mentioned above with no success. However I did find another and, in my opinion, a more simple fix.

I navigated to the folder mentioned in Geek TieGuy's post above. (I only had one folder, instead of two as mentioned in TieGuy's fix.) Opening that folder leads you to a user.config file. If you edit this file (in notepad for example) about 1/3 of the way down there is a line that shows the zip code field and has a zip code value shown. Like this:

<setting name=

I think there was a problem with the weather service not responding to location queries for a while. I'm not sure what the status of this problem is right now, but it should be a temporary problem.

Hmmmm...Just noticed that mine started doing it recently.

EDIT: Followed the instructions on your link and it works.

Howiki,

Works great now and does NOT seem slower to me. The changes that GTG suggested (deleting the folder) should not casue any slowdown.
