I found a way to install TouchSmart 3.0 software from big All-in-one machines. For now it's only a base app with no additional plugins such as Hulu, Twitter, Calendar etc.

Basicly, this is how it works:

My configuration:

TX2-1050ew, bios f.25, win7 retail 64bit

1. Install MediaSmart 3.

 a) download 3.0 D MVP version from support pages, unpack it with WinRAR. Now go to HPMSTSMVP_3.0.2.3316_ALL_APP_W7_WW-01\hp\tmp\src and launch setup.exe as admin.

 b)  go to HPMSTSMovieTheme_3.0.1.3102_ALL_APP_W7_WW-01\hp\tmp\src and launch setup.exe as admin

 c) download 3.0 D MediaSmart StartMenu from support pages, unpack it with WinRAR. Now go to MSSmartMenu_3.0.30.1_ALL_APP_W7_WW-01\hp\tmp\src and you will see two installers, choose the one for you needs 32/64bit and double-click it, let it install

2. Restart your machine. Now MediaSmart 3.0 should work. You can install additional MediaSmart 3.0 apps such as DVD, for me it works like a charm.

3. Installing TouchSmart 3.

 a) download TouchSmart 3.0 app from support pages of any TouchSmart IQxxx PC, I choosed sp44425 package

 b) unpack it with WinRAR. Go to sp44425\src and unpack another archive, now go to sp44425\src\HPTSApp\hp\tmp\src install SetupHPTouchSmart.exe after successfull installation you'll see gorgeous TouchSmart Home icon :)

Go ahead, launch it :)

Now we have stock TouchSmart 3.0 app working on 'old' TX2. Now we have to find a way how to add other apps. I tried Twitter and Calendar apps but this is a bit more complicated than base app, I tried installing those just like base app but it doesn't show up.

Now I found that there's another exe file in sp44425\src\HPTSApp\hp\tmp\src called SetupHelloWorld.exe,I installed it and voila! It works! But basicly it's nothing else like just some kind of official HP HelloWorld app for TouchSmart and it doesn't gives you any additional opportunities.

Few screens  to show how this thing looks like:

I'll try to find a way to install all additionall apps but you can join me :) Together maybe we'll fin a way, there must be a way, it's only software :P

Merry Christmas to you all btw ;)

p.s. I installed polish version so don't be confused about that, you can choose English in installation aswell.

Nice work :D

Maybe you should put a tutorial on hp.com... I think they need this more than us... lol

You can start telling all the softpacks you used... so we can start downloading :)

When I drag the icons up they are just big static icons.
Nothing runs unless I open the item full screen (all by itself).  When the items are open full screen they seem to run fine.

@rodak69 and others who have everything installed, are your programs running when you drag the icons up?

When I drag my clock up into the upper row, the clock doesnt show the time--its just a very large static icon.

Does anyone know how to allow the (larger) items that are dragged into the upper row to run normally?

lazerus,

Do you have the tx2 that came with Windows 7 and TS 3.0? If so, you have the by-design behavior. If you were to change it, your performance and battery life would suffer severely.

How did you manage to register the apps to show in touchsmart Home?

I've pulled the entire Touchsmart package from a new TX2-1375dx and installed it on my TX2-1270us (both running windows 7 x64)... EVERYTHING is working. I had to move a few xml files around to get the calendar, weather, and notes apps working. I'll try to post the exact steps if needed, but it is possible if you can get your hands on the install files.

General steps taken:

1. Make sure all MediaSmart 3.0 components are installed
2. Unzip all Touchsmart installers into c:\ (root) - they should end up in C:\HP
3. Install Touchsmart 3.0 using the msi file in c:\hp\tmp\src (double check that, it may be a setup file)
4. Install all other Touchsmart Apps using the msi files
5. Run all the .bat files in c:\hp\tmp
6. Make sure the XML files are in the proper folders (I found the proper files and folders by examining the bat files for the calendar and notes apps)
7. reboot

I didn't get Touchsmart's Smartcenter to start up using the mediasmart button yet, but it does launch from an icon on the desktop.

Let me know if you need further details.

Good luck!

Thanks man but the only touchsmart 3 software i can find is the one for touchsmart pcs,Can you upload the TX2 touchsmart 3.

January 3, 2010 2:17 PM

It's the same software.

January 3, 2010 4:25 PM

ya i know but isn't the touchsmart3 for tx2 optimized for battery use?

January 3, 2010 6:22 PM

Yes. And, unfortunately, installing it on a TX2 that didn't already have it preinstalled is not something that's supported by HP at the moment (and I don't know if it will ever be). If you install the 3.0 software on a TX2 that originally shipped with Vista (and was upgraded to Windows 7), you won't get the battery-focused features.

January 3, 2010 10:55 PM

I think that will be supported, I have the right to install a clean win7 on my tx2, and still use the hp software. If they didnt, hp is not giving support for win7, period. Only one button not working, means no win7 support.

January 4, 2010 12:10 AM

I don't know. You can install Windows 7 all you want, of course, that is your right. As for what HP would commit to in terms of support, I'm not sure. You'd have to read the HP license agreement that comes with the computer (originally) very closely, I guess. I'm just going by the fact that the Windows 7 upgrade DVD set provided by HP doesn't seem to include the TouchSmart 3.0 software and that it isn't listed on the TX2 software download site for Windows 7. I've heard that if you buy the Windows 7 upgrade from HP, you'll still have support from HP for it, but if you buy it from someone else ("retail"), support would revert back to Microsoft. Of course this is all purely personal speculation on my part.

January 4, 2010 9:06 AM

Sure, mine is speculation too, but, If you delete by accident any touchsmart component, you´ll have to restore win7, that is ridiculous.

January 4, 2010 11:00 PM updated: January 4, 2010 11:04 PM

Well in my case my tx2 came with vista 32bit so if i choose the hp update kit they won't send me except windows 7 32 and that's not an option for me,so i ended buying windows 7 ultimate x64.Hp is suppose to give us touchsmart software because this is a touchsmart PC as advertised and labeled but instead we've got mediasmart software on our vista machines,as trihy said "this is ridiculous".

January 5, 2010 12:15 AM

I'm not sure the previous generation TX2's that shipped with Vista were ever advertised as having the TouchSmart software. That started with the TX2's that shipped with Windows 7.

January 14, 2010 8:02 PM

@GeekTieGuy I realize you are an HP employee and so you automatically are biased toward the HP side of things. That is not a bad thing of course, just a different opinion. And it lets us non-HP affiliated customers see the "HP thinking" somewhat. So, yes, as a sheer technicality, the Vista > 7 tx2 s were never advertised as having TouchSmart 3.0 However, they were market as the "HP TouchSmart tx2" even before the upgrade option program. And it so happened, that most customers didn't realize that the software on the TouchSmart desktops was far more capable.

However, the consumer thinks of it this way: A Windows 7 running retail model of tx2 has TouchSmart 3.0 The customer bought a tx2 when he was told that he would get a HP-supported upgrade from Vista to Windows 7. Now, of course, he assumes that includes TouchSmart 3.0, especially because he sees it at retail. HP, however, was sneaky enough not to mention that in writing anywhere. And of course, HP has all the standard legal disclaimers in place, which absolve them of responsible behavior. So legally, neither HP nor you are wrong.

From a customer service and reputation perspective however, HP is digging its grave slowly.

I've read your note. I don't know how to word an appropriate reply and I'm not sure you're expecting one.
