I have an HP Touchsmart IQ816.  It has suddenly decided it cannot detect any wireless networks.  I didn't do anything different or move anything.  I just noticed that the network was off this afternoon when it was fine this morning.

I did all the usual things to try to fix it.  Reset the adapter.  Even did a system restore.  It's not the router.  I'm on a wireless to my router right now on a different pc and the router is fine.  I still changed the router's channel anyway, just incase.

Moving the pc around that room isn't fixing it either.

Is there anything else I can try?  If I have to call in a tech, it's money I'd rather not have to spend.  I just don't know what would suddenly cause it to do this.  Usually I can detect both my router and the neighbor's and now nothing is showing.

I have all the latest updates.  My firmware is all updated, the drivers are all updated.

I tried reinstalling the original LAN and Broadcom drivers.  That actually worked for about two minutes.  It detected the networks, I was able to connect and then....it went down again and insists there are no networks in range.

The only time it seems to see any networks is when it comes out of standby, it says it's identifying a network, then it appears to connect to an unknown network with limited connectivity and that's it.  When I go to scan for networks, it still says there are none in range and it really isn't connected to anything.  Can't get online at all.

Help?  Does this mean the network card itself is going bad?

Carrigon,

My first thought is that the wifi card may be going bad. Since you've done system restores and installed the latest wifi drivers, then that should eliminate any software/driver issues.

First, just as a test, turn off your router for a minute or so and then turn it back on. I have lost wifi connectivity from one of several of my computers in the past while all tehe others on my network maintain connectivity. Rebooting the router fixed that problem. It seemed like the problem manifesed itself most frequently after my laptop came out of sleep or hibernation.

Also, if you have a software firewall, turn it off.

Cheap fix: I have thought of taking my wifi acrd out of my TS and putting it into my HP laptop since I use a wired connection on my TS but getting to it is a bear. A cheap fix would be to buy a 802.11n USB wifi adapter and just plug it into one of the USB ports on the back. That'll save you from oening up your machine or having to send it in for a repair.

Woohoo! I won my Touchsmart!

I did try turning off the router and the modem. It made no difference. The only thing that did anything was when I installed the driver, for the two minutes it saw the networks and it connected to where i could get on my blog page. But then it died again and insisted it saw no networks. It still doesn't see any. But when it comes out of stand by, it says it sees an "unidentified" network and is connected with limited connectivity. But when you check into that, there really is no network listed and it can't surf. So it's sort of ghosting it.

I tried installing a few wifi tools like Netcrawler and Vistumbler and neither of those are seeing any networks. So the card is just plain not picking up any wireless networks from anywhere.

There is nothing bad showing in a Vista hardware scan, but, when I ask it to repair this connection is does admit there could be a problem with the adapter. I've tried turning the adapter off and on, I've tried disabling the card and reenabling it. Nothing is getting it to see a wireless network. And I reinstalled the driver for the card, plus the LAN drivers, like any driver that had anything to do with the net.

I think the antennae on the card isn't working anymore. Or something is loose in it or it just plain went bad.

I did order a USB wireless, but I'm still leaning toward getting someone to look at this, mainly because I want to make sure nothing else inside it is going bad. It could also be as simple as something being loose, but I don't want to be the one opening it up. It's too hard to get all the screws off and pull everything apart just to get at this one thing. I'm better off having someone do it.

The USB adapter worked perfectly, I'm back online with my Touchsmart. However, I still don't like not knowing why I have a faulty adapter inside my Touchsmart. But this was the cheapest, fastest solution. I've disabled the wireless LAN adapter that came with the Touchsmart so it doesn't conflict with this new USB one. And so far, it's working great. This USB adapter saw my wireless network, my neighbor's, and a third one. And I had four green bars for signal strength. I'm on it now and it's fine. But if anyone ever finds the real cause of why there is a faulty adapter problem, please post. Other people are reporting the same problem on different forums.
