Last night I tried to search a TV program and I noticed you can record the whole series -- it gives you all the dates and times it will record this program.  Does my Media Centre need to be opened or will it record it in the background -- even if it's turned off?  How exactly does this work?  Thanks in advance.

Yes, it record in background with the computer on, You can schedule a recording and leave the computer on standby mode (not turned off), when the time comes, it turn on from standby and record.

Best Regards.

It is not necessary, Media Center will open when the time of record comes.

Best Regards.

Actually that's not 100% accurate, Media Center will not open when the recording is due, it will record in the background and show the red recording dot in the system tray.

Many PCs will also wake themselves from standby and hibernation to record if their BIOS supports it, I haven't checked to see if the HP BIOS will do that, but it's worth a test.
