I think you have to use ati mobility drivers, not the standard / desktop one

January 9, 2010 11:43 AM

It installed just fine for me. I always get my drivers from Integrated/Motherboard rather than the Mobility drivers, since the latter seems to be updated much less often and the HD 3200 which the TX2 has appears in the Integrated/Motherboard list.

yeah i downloaded the one from the motherboard list too, will give it a shot with the moblity ones..did you have any problems installing the AHCI driver??

January 9, 2010 12:48 PM

BTW, the hp ones are not 8.6, its just an hp number. The real version is 9.x

Maybe the mobility drivers has some optimization for power save.

Dont know, I used to use the standard/desktop drivers and always installs fine.

I have the AHCI driver installed from that package just fine.

Both the desktop, mobility, and motherboard drivers all work and will install. However the mobility drivers have some optimizations for heat and battery life since that is a concern for laptops.

When i go through the ati.com website and look at the drivers, i noticed that

Win7-64bit > Mobility Radeon > Mobility Radeon HD 3000 Series = 9.9 (also notes that it is BETA for win7)
Win7-64bit > Integrated/Motherboard > Radeon HD 3200 = 9.12

After comparing 'Release Notes'
9.9 includes the 8.65 display drivers
9.12 includes 8.681

Both include the same type of software suite (hydravision, wdm, ixp, catalyst cc, etc.) and only lists the support as ATI Radeon HD 3200 Series

Does not mention anything special about the optimization (powerplay, etc.) for mobility, I have a tx2-1020us i received couple days ago running on vista64. I will be installing the 9.12 and check the display driver options/settings.

Well, Im using the mobility ones, and on ati power saving mode, I get 3.3 on win7 graphics.
On non ati power saving mode, I get 4.x or something like that.

If you get similar results, maybe the drivers are the same.

You will get approximately the same results using the drivers. The difference is how it handles the thermal management for it.

There is no way to get gpu temperature on tx2500/tx2?

January 12, 2010 8:47 AM updated: January 12, 2010 8:48 AM

HWinfo does it for the tx2. Not sure if the tx2500 supports monitoring for that since thats a compleatly different board and GPU.

http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

My results using the mobility drivers are typically 10c cooler than using the desktop drivers. This is assuming good cooling of the unit. Test was done on a cooling pad.

As far as I know, tx2500 and tx2 share the same board, right?

Hwmonitor wasnt showing GPU temp on tx2500. Ill try on tx2 to see what happens :)

thanks

No, as I stated above, they are different. The tx2500, while an AMD platform, has a different chipset (belive 780 AMD chipset), and a different GPU (nvidia).

Tx2 has the 785g chipset, and the ATI graphics solution.

Maybe you are confused with tx2000

I have both, tx2500 and tx2, and has the same mother 780 chipset, with ati graphics :)

Anyway, I cant get gpu temp with hmonitor :(

January 12, 2010 9:48 PM

ok so i installed the 9.12, it has POWERPLAY. Also when i first opened this laptop, the Windows vista index thing gave it a 4.1 for graphics and 3.6 for gaming graphics.

After update it is
Graphics 4.1 to 4.3
Gaming graphics 3.6 to 4.0

as for the gpu temps, i have hwmonitor from the start, i don't see gpu temps. I have a tx2-1020us

January 13, 2010 8:22 AM

You are correct Trihy. I mixed up the 2000 and 2500's. My appologies.

I will look when I get home again at HWmonitor.
