Hi there,

last year i bought a HP Touchsmart TX2-1050ED with 4GB of ram.

Now in the specs it was stated that this product supported 8GB of ram as maximum. But now, when i look at the kingston site for example, it shows it only supports a maximum of 4GB ram.

Anyone knows if this thingy can handle 8GB of ram ( or perhaps 6GB ) ?

Thanks

Im pretty sure its 8gb hps own site contridicts it self in a few places. But im running 8gb in my systm and it uses all of it. 1300 is the same everything minus 2 stickers and a os. So it should work

Correct, the tx2 supports up to 8gb of memory.

Where did you purchase your memory from?

according to http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01669278&tmp_task=prodin...

your tx2-1050ed only supports up to 4 gb

Umm, that's what the laptop shipped with, delakev, not what it can be upgraded to.

The theoretical limit on the TX2 is 17.2 billion Gigabytes imposed by the architecture. The real limit is whatever you can buy that fits the two sockets of your system. The max I've seen is 8 Gb, but I could imagine 16 is available (and is likely overkill).

Another concern, of which I'm very hazy on, is whether you can increase the speed of your ram you buy.

are you sure? cause it says "Memory Max Up to 4 GB DDR2"

and i have seen other product specification of the tx2 and it would ship with 4 gb but the Memory Max part would say 8 GB DDR2 instead of 4

someone with a tx2 that has product specs of 4 gb max give it a try to 8 gb and let me know! =P lol

Do your research into RAM, you'll find your answer.

Again, It will support up to 8gb. The reason for the HP document stating 4gb is because if you look below the hardware specs to what OS goes along with those specs, you will see it is Vista home 32bit. The 32bit OS only supports a max of 4gb of ram, so they wont let you configure more on it as it would be worthelss and unuseable.

Just a quick side note: there is a hack that you can do to make x86 use more then 4gb of ram.

Can anyone say can I increase memory speed? I'm planning to buy 2 x 4GB DDR3 1333mHz but original memory is only 800mHz, I think.

I have been very interested in trying this out. Prototype NM1s suggestion to do your research is obtuse to say the least. I have spent hours over the last three days trying to do research on this. In that time this page has been the most helpful page I have found.

Every memory manufacturer will tell you that you can only upgrade to 4GB. You would expect them to be right because they make money out of selling memory. However the motherboard will definitely support 8GB. I don't think I would be tempted to try more than that, the information that is attached to the motherboard is pretty clear cut.

Some of the higher ranges of tx2 are quite open about being able to accept 8GB but mine the 1160ea claims it will only accept 4. I like this theory that it is due to the limitations of the operating system being 32 bit. I have upgraded my ram to 4gb a couple of years back and have discovered that windows 7 will only allow me to use 2.75GB anyway so I will definitely be upgrading to 64 bit at some time. Whether I do this soon and get a windows 7 install or wait until windows 8 I have not decided. The latter makes sense with a touch screen.

A theory I had that might affect the amount of ram in the computer was perhaps the power of the processor might make a difference. Unfortunately I no too little about hardware to verify this theory. I currently have an RM75 while the larger systems have always been able to take a zm86 and a couple of months ago the latest documentation tells me that the tx2s will also support a zm87. I would love to know if anyone has successfully tried a zm88 in their tx2 because that would be interesting to try but the main problem is that HP would have to support it in their BIOS. I fear that if they do not specifically allude to the zm88 then it will not work.

With a faster cpu and 64 bit operating system I see no reason at all why 8gb should not work but aside from this page I have not found anyone who would say it is possible. As for mixing different speeds I would say that was definitely not a good idea. I have heard that if a manufacturer does not specify the compatibility of something then you are taking a gamble. I assumed that was a specification of manufacturer rather than specs themselves. If it is specs themselves then maybe it is a gamble worth trying if you can borrow the memory. If it is relevant to different manufacturers who are releasing the same specced memory then I don't fancy your chances at all.

Oh and a little additional information is that whilst researching I have found a lot of people elsewhere on the internet who claim they have doubled the maximum ram in various other laptops and found it works perfectly well. However if you want to take a gamble then do it with decent quality ram. In fact I would be loathe to use poor quality ram even if I was sticking to the recommended limits.
