A program att adjust the ambient light like on the philips ambilight tv would really add an extra dimension to this computer. I would be glad to help, im an experienced .net developer and hopefully you have a .net api availible for the ambilight.
I love the RGB LED Ambient light in the front of the newer Touchsmart systems, but the only application that's available at this point lets you set it to a single color at a time.
Is there a developer kit available for programming this light? I'd love to see an application that works like the Ambilight, automatically matching the dominant color of the current screen image, or maybe the ability to set it up to color cycle while the machine is asleep. A single color is cool, but animating the light would be even cooler.
I know this is probably not officially sanctioned, but couldn't you decompile the "HP Ambient Light" application which adjusts the light color to see how this works?
It would be better if there were an official API, but I certainly haven't seen anything.
i have the 507, can i change the colors of the light, i heard there is this HP Ambient light program... but i cant see it or cant find it? help. thank you.
It's sorta hidden. The easy way to find it is to go to the Windows Vista application search by clicking the windows icon in the bottom left corner, then start typing "HP Ambient Light".
The other way to find it is to go to Control Panel, then switch to Classic View, and you can find it in there. From there you can change to pretty much any color that you want.
This is a really cool feature and HP should make it more obvious for new users.
i still cant find it... someone tell me if i have it or not? 507
That's weird. I've got the IQ815, and that's where it was on my machine. I can't speak for the IQ507, but your unit does have a colored light below the display, right?
Try going under "Computer", then type in
C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\HP Ambient Light
In the address bar.
It's in that folder (named HP Ambient Light.exe). You should be able to make a shortcut to it from there by ctrl-shift-dragging it to your desktop.
I don't think 500 series have color options. it's three-step intensity white light only.
BTW mine has been malfunctioning. It has been flickering, esp. noticeable on the highest settings. Then it shuts off after 5-10 secs. I fist thought faulty power supply, but it malfuntions even with the monitor off, which should reduce strain on the power supply. does anyone know if it is entirely controlled by a hardware switch on the side of the unit, or does it integrate into the system and runs as a system device on 500 series?
iRawly said: i still cant find it... someone tell me if i have it or not? 507The 500 series only has white light. The 800 series has color.
It's been a while since I asked about this, but has anybody out there figured out a way to do custom programming of the ambient light on the 800 series Touchsmarts? I'd love to use it like a Philips Ambilight for watching movies, etc.
I have the IQ804 if you turn the ambilight on I can set mine to red, yellow, green, blue, pink, purple, brown, white. I can set these colers as light or as deep as i want. then theres the low med, and high brightness's
I think what bob is looking for is a program that changes the light in relation to what you are doing/watching.
Philips has a feature on some of their Plasma/LCD TV's that changes teh color light htat eminates from behind the TV (not the screen). The lights are cold cathode tubes like the ones on our touchsmarts and theu are mounted behind the TV and reflect off the wall. It looks cool at first but after a while you get tired of it and turn it off. (which is what I have done with my ambient light...most of the time)
I think for someone that uses their TS more than a computer it would be a cool feature..especially if it is wall mounted.

Woohoo! I won my Touchsmart!
Yeah, that is what I'm looking for.
The software that ships with the 800 series lets you set the color to pretty much anything you'd like, it wouldn't be that hard to write something that let you do more than just set a single solid color.
Hi Guys,
Just to throw some "light" onto what i was thinking regarding this development, could the abi light scroll around the color spectrum or if watching movies or listening to music, the ambi light could change depending on what is playing. Similiar to windows media visualisations, or similair app. hope this helps
On the flickering mentioned by NeedNoIntroduction, my son's 510 also has this issue. I too thought it was power supply related but it seems not as I tried it with the higher wattage power supply from an 810.
In discussions with HP they believe it to be a hardware fault but I think the problem is pretty generic because I see the same on all 500s I've looked at (in PC World etc.)
Quite disappointing really and seems to be another quality issue!
HP did offer to fix it but my son was so devestated when his HP laptop died a number of times and spent more time being repaired than at home he didn't want to send the PC away...
Anyone ever figure out a way to do the ambilight effect with the color cold cathode(?) strip on the 800 series?
I'm looking for something that works like this:

Does anyone have the package to install Ambient Light in order to use it on my IQ830?
