I just got a nice replacement HDD courtesy of HP,  and need to transfer the contents.

I had planned on running Clonezilla from my External HDD, but I can't find an option in the bios to do such.

Could someone please confirm this or correct me, and/or give alternative options other than than boot from CD (none handy and I don't have the means to get any at the moment).

The Tx2 Supports booting from USB Hard drives. I install windows 7 from it and also run ubuntu live CD's from flash drives all the time on it.

Alright then, time to do further research, thanks for response jolly. :D

Press the ESC Key upon first booting your PC and there you go.

The ONLY thing that you cannot boot from is the SD Reader for some stupid reason.

After pressing escape, what do you do? I went to boot options, but none of the options (boot from internal hard drive, cd, or network drive) seemed to detect my Clonezilla install.

I'm using my iPod (which is enabled as an external storage device), could this be my problem?

Update: I've found how to set the iPod into Disk Mode, but it still is not found during boot-up. I'm not sure whether the problem is with the: iPod, Laptop, or software I'm running.

I may be having the same problem as the original poster, only my purpose is to boot a live linux distro from usb. When going into the startup options (hitting esc on bootup) I can see the options for booting from the hard drive, cd drive, or network. No option for booting from usb.

Perhaps I need to do a bios update...will have to research that.

February 12, 2010 1:15 PM

I found out part of the problem. You need to manually switch the boot order to boot from usb before internal hard drives, which will automatically boot a connected usb first (it will never prompt you/give the option to boot from usb).

My problem was assuming that iPods, when enabled as external hard drives, would function the same as all external hard drives.

February 13, 2010 9:54 AM

Still very strange since I do not even have to do that.

All you do is pop in a USB Stick....turn on....press esc....then F9 then select the USB Stick.

Works every time for me.

I am also experiencing a problem with trying to boot from  a USB drive (Win7) loaded on it. I had the bios flashed with the latest update from HP Support & Drivers. It successfully upgraded to .25 from .15. If you dont mind me asking, what bios version were you running when you were able to install win7 from your flash drive?
Some issues I face when I try to boot from a bootable USB:
With USB plugged in it takes forever for it to get to the boot option(s) menu
Once I do get to the boot options there are only two options (internal drive & hard drive) no USB option. I had a tx2500 and USB was an option on that system but not an option on this system (tx2-1020us).
So far from what I have found from my research is that some tx2's have the capability to USB boot and some dont. This appears to be a fault on HP (go figure). Being that this is not a standard feature for a majority of HP's users, I get the feeling that they will not assist in supporting a solution to this issue.

worked for me on both 21 and 25.

I know that this does not help you out but I think that you need to talk to HP about this.

The booting from USB is a standard feature for the Tx2's. I would agree with Digi in saying that HP will have to be contacted and something done, RMA it to review a possibly corrupt bios settings.

I have installed from USB flash drives under both F25 and the previous revision (f12 or f15, forget which).

I know this is a dumb question towards you, but are you sure the settings are correct for how you are setting up your flash drive to begin with and it is a high speed drive and USB 2.0? Using cheap/low quality flash drives will cause alot of issues and be very slow. I have special ones I use for installing with that have the highest transfer rates available for USB flash.

First, your question was not dumb. lol... It was and is a totally valid question. I am quite certain my settings are right (besides the fact that there are not very many options to begin with).Like I mentioned earlier, I had a tx2500 and USB was a boot option but not with this tx2. Digi is entirely correct in that I do need to contact HP about it. I'm just afraid that it's a lost cause because they probably dont consider USB booting a necessity for their usere (but "oh contrar").
I know the USB drive (with win7 on it) was and is working fine because I had it working on another system the night prior and just to make sure, just before I tried to use it in my tx2. I wouldnt say that the thumb drive is the highest quality out there but I dont think I would consider it the worst either (PNG product).
I dont think I'm the only one with this problem though after reading through this post a couple times. It seems like there are many tx2's with this problem, probably a ton of them (except most people dont need to use the USB boot feature).
Thanks for your time guys. I at least appreciate your response(s).
If I figure out a/the solution I'll be sure to post it, assuming it's not too complicated to explain. Thanks again!

Have you tried other USB sticks as well out of curiosity? Just curious as to what all has been tried =).

Tried reverting to default in your BIOS....MAYBE that will do something?

I actually tried USB booting before I even tinkered or upgraded the bios (when it was at v.15). That's why I thought no big deal at first, 'just need to update my bios' but that didnt work either.

Here's the story as to why I even am trying to USB boot.

I am attempting to tripple boot my tx2 (OSX, Linux, Windows). My friend has OSX snow leopard on a bootable USB which works because I have seen it work (which is one more reason why I know something is up with my tx2 not allowing me to USB boot). I have tried three different OSX cd's (leo4all (most unsuccessful), kalyway 10.5.2 md5 patched (successful upto the point where it needs to boot off the hdd),  iDeneb 10.5.5 md5 (like kalyway successful upto the point where it needs to boot off of the hdd)). Now I want to try my friends USB OSX to see if maybe that one will work since it has cameleon bootloader on it with OSX and it worked/works on his system (which is not a tx2 but I'm in a way desperate and trying anything out). I know why my multiple OSX discs are not working because I need to get the camelon bootloader on before my system can boot to that OSX partition. I'm still doing research on this but my next step if I cant get my system to boot from USB is to try and get the camelon bootloader on through windows (which maybe not be possible at all, which is also why I still need to do some more research).

Since we could not get his OSX usb to work we tried his Windows7 bootable usb and that did not work either. Just to make sure my system is the problem we brought another classmate into it and tried his usb bootable Ubuntu. We are most certain it's my system. Three working usb bootable Operating Systems that dont want to work on my tx2 only (as far as we can see).

I still have yet to contact HP but it's still on my to do list. I will still be sure to keep you updated on any progress or success I may have.

Thanks again for all your help, I will keep in touch.

Honda, what I'm not seeing here is that you have tried other USB sticks, including older small ones, some combination of USB stick and file system do not and will not ever be seen as a bootable device.

Just because some systems are more liberal in what they look for on a USB stick to boot doesn't mean they're meeting the bootable spec itself.

Use a nice small 256MB stick made bootable with the ancient HP "DOS-on-a-stick" utility http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?swIt... for a test to see where your issue might be.

DOH!

Yes some usb sticks are not bootable......forgot about that.

To go along with this, I have quite a number of USB sticks laying around for various useage. As stated before, I have a few special ones that are high quality that I use for installing windows OS's and live CD useage. The brand for them is PNY, model XR8. I have other PNY sicks though, their normal attache version that I have tried to make into boot USB sticks that refuse to work correctly on most of my systems here. No reason that I can find for it, but nothing likes that particular model.

Thank you Diane,

I will try the "DOS-on-a-stick" when I can. But I am not convinced that will help though, due to the fact(s) that Digi has had success with his usb bootable Win7 to work on his tx2 along with several other members (from what I have read). I am probably wrong, but I think there are only a handfull of ways to create a bootable usb with Win7 on it. If it works on some tx2 systems and not on other tx2 systems it leads me to believe that this is an issue from HP. I dont know if that explanation made sense... What I am trying to say is that it just doesnt make sense that some tx2's can boot usb (and have the option in their BIOS settings) while other tx2's cannot usb boot (and not have the option in their BIOS settings).

Again, I am still going to contact HP when I get the chance. I've been busy studying for my CCNA exam. I knew I should not have started a project like this because my focus is on trying to get this tx2 to work while I got an exam coming up! GRRR!!! lol...

Thanks again for your help, and I will keep in touch.

February 25, 2010 7:03 AM

Ohhh, fellow networker =). Best of luck on the CCNA, most of it was pretty easy except for some of the older stuff on frame relay.

I am working on my BSCI currently, that one is a pain with all the IPv6 changes =s.
