I was ready to buy a IQ816 and the salesman recommended I wait until Windows 7 is available.  His point was that the touchsrceen capabilities were significantly constrained by the limitations of Vista.  He said Windows 7 would greatly enhance those capabilities, but that it wasn't simply loading Windows 7 when it is available, but that HP would have to make some ehancements in the hardware/software interface to take advantage of Windows 7.

Should I wait until Windows 7 is available?

I've seen several discussions about people running the pre beta Windows 7 on their touchsmarts with very good results. Theres a lot of discussion on the Windows 7 forums over at gottabemobile.com from some people who have been running it. A few of the guys have been twisting my arm to load it on mine (I have been testing it on a tablet pc) but I'm going to wait a bit as my TS is now my "hub" in my home. I might just purchase another HDD and swap them out to test it so I wont lose all the stuff I have loaded on my TS if anything goes wrong. I would run it as a dual boot of course if I loaded it on my current drive.

As far as waiting... technology is always improving so if you are waiting for something better...you'll always be waiting. Besides, you can have a cool TS now then load Win 7 later. The best of both worlds.

Well put Dave!

Besides, I hear Windows 8 is supposed to be better than 7. I think I'll hold out until then. Wink

Sometimes waiting for new tech can make sense if you're at the end of the product cycle, and the 'new' stuff is about to hit within a short time frame... say weeks or even a month. Win 7 is at least a year away, provided there aren't additional delays from the final product launch. (something MS hasn't exactly been 'good' about in the recent past. In other words, you could be waiting a long time. Might be best to hop on board and start having fun, then upgrade later when Win7 is available.

Following the typical upgrade history of Windows, Vista is kind of like, dare I say...WindowsME. Yep, I'm sure most of you all remember that disaster. I "rolled back" to Win98se after my laptop continually crashed with it. So Windows 7 should be a winner. And given that the early pre beta releases have been so stable and had a low enough memory/cpu profile to even run verywell on my 800mhz UMPC, I say it will be a winner. And, I'll even go out on a limb...be released on time!

As for what I have seen and read about touch in W7, you-and all of us, should be pretty happy with it on our touch enabled devices. Again, though, it also depends on the OEM's releasing enhanced drivers to support W7. Im sure though that since HP has invested so much in touch and is on the forefront of the technology, they will have drivers available for us when we decide to upgrade.

Listen guys. Windows 7 is going to be handed out as an update to Vista to users who bought a unit with Vista preinstalled after June 2008. Trust me on this. They are going to practically hand out Win7 to Vista users.

I have partitioned 50 GB on my HD and installed Win7 and the multi-touch drivers from Nextwindow. After about a week of downloading drivers and tweaking, I can tell you this ; Windows 7 rocks. The multitouch is awesome and Media center is a thousand times better with touch. Forget about scroll bars because the finger surfing in Win7 makes you forget that there was ever a scrollbar even there. Forget the Touchcenter software, start working on driver updates for Win 7. It is so much better than Vista and is perfect for the Touchsmart. You TS devs need to stop focusing on Vista at this very moment and start taking a look at Windows 7.

I agree with Jerry, i'd hang our for an official announcement from Microsoft on the upgrade scheme, it's already been widley reported that users purchasing from June 08 will get an upgrade, now we're just waiting on the official word from Microsoft.

Touchsmart + Windows 7 is the ultimate computing experience!

Microsoft Admits Vista is less Good product. I think we should try windows 7 because Windows 7 is the improved version of the Vista operating system from Microsoft. I have been using Windows 7 build 7100 for 6 months  and really like it so far due to its enhanced memory management and better security control.

Never had trouble with either OS.

In fact, tablet wise, Vista inking is better. Less features, but more reliable.
