In my environment I am required to run fiber NICs for security, so I came up with this proof of concept to add a Gig fiber NIC.

First I purchased a PEMINI2x1 card to convert a mini PCI express to a PCI express 1x slot. I removed the wireless NIC and replaced it with the PEMINI2x1 card and wired the required power into the hard drive power as pictured below:

Next I needed a Gig 1x PCI express fiber card.

I purchased this one:

 The cover would need to have a small mod for this proof of concept so I cut a slot, it is a little crude but I did not have any good cutting tools today:

 It really only sticks out 1.75 inches. It will get a project box soon.
