Yahoo messenger 9 does not recognize the webcam in my Touchsmart.  Does anyone know if there is a work around or new driver availbe to enable the webcam in YM?  I have confirmed the webcam is working fine in Vista 64 Video app?  The Webcam app in YM9 does not show any available webcams.

Run the webcam compatibility test at the Messenger support site and see if that shows you video. http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/messenger/messenger9/webcam/mstacamtest.html

Hi,

Using the webcam with Yahoo! Messenger
To use the camera in Yahoo Messenger, change the camera source as follows:

1.Open Yahoo! Messenger and select Messenger , My Webcam .
NOTE: A Warning dialog box will appear the first time you make this selection. The message advises you about legal responsibilities of using a Web camera on the internet. You can stop the warning from appearing again by selecting the checkbox next to the Do not show this warning again message and then clicking the OK button.
Figure 10: Warning dialog box

A My Webcam window appears. If a live image is visible in the dialog box, the webcam is set up correctly. If the live image is not visible, continue.

2.Click File and then click Preferences .

The Yahoo Messenger Preferences window appears.

3.Click the Camera Source button.

Figure 11: Camera Source button

4.From the drop down list, select CyberLink Web Camera Filter , click OK , and then click OK again.

You should now be able to use the webcam by clicking the webcam button from the main window. If not, restart the computer and make sure that no other software programs access the webcam before using the webcam in Yahoo! Messenger.

Using the webcam with other software titles
There are many other software titles available that can use the webcam. If you are having difficulty getting the webcam to work, try the following troubleshooting actions:

Close all software and restart the computer before starting a new webcam session. Sometimes, closing the software application that was using the webcam is not enough. Software may not properly "release" the webcam. When this happens, the webcam cannot be used by any other software application until the computer is restarted.

Make sure CyberLink Web Camera Filter is selected as the Video Source in the software you are trying to use. The various software titles that can use the webcam use different terms for describing a video source and the option to select it can vary. Usually, camera, webcam, or video settings can be found in the software's preferences or properties pages. If you have trouble finding where you can change the video source setting, try using the software's built-in help system.

Hope this helps you out.

Make sure the input device for the webcam is actually set to the webcam. It will probobly default to the tv-tuner card as it is also a video capture device.

I just found out that my IQ526 webcam doesn't work either. I just bought the PC a week ago. The only Camera Source showing in Yahoo IM is Microsoft WDM Image Capture (Win32), Version: 6.0.6001.1800

Um..., Lets see.  If your webcam works with other programs, then maybe it is not your webcam.  Since it seems to only not work with Yahoo, then why blame your touchsmart?

In your yahoo messenger settings, make sure HP Webcam is selected and not "default webcam" or anything else.

OK, I decided to load Yahoo IM 9 to see whats going on and it works for me. I'm using an IQ 816 which uses the same webcam.

Initially, I went into yahoo messenger preferences and tried to set up the webcam but it was grayed out. Thought.."Hmmm, maybe theyre right", but I dug a little deeper and heres what I did.

In messenger, click on the "Messenger" menu item then first go to "my webcam". Click the agreement box to use the webcam and voila! It now works. Then you can go into messengers preferences for the webcam and cahnge your settings.

David, I don't have an option to chose the HP Webcam.  I've also made sure I have all update on my IQ526.  Now what? Monika

Hi Monika,

At first I didn't have the option either so I went into the "messenger" menu in YIM and chose the "my webcam" menu choice. After clicking the agreement box I was able to vo back into the options and make my changes.

See if that helps.

Sorry David, that doesn't work.  I went so far as to restore all factory settings and then re-install Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 just to make sure nothing else was interfering.  The only Camera Source shown is the same one I listed on my initial post.  And I did click OK on the agreement for My Webcam.  I'm at the point where I can still return it to the store and pick out a desktop that I can expand more easily.  Thanks for all your help! :-)  Monika

If you go into device manager and click on "imaging devices" what is shown as the imaging device? Mine says HP Webcam.
If you see nothing or something different, it may be that the webcam software/driver is not properly installed.

Sorry things aren't working out. You have me scratching my head on this one.

Mine shows the same as yours and I didn't find any YouCam webcam software under Uninstall Programs either.   Thanks again, Monika

Found the following solution to the touchsmart webcam problem:
1/. - installed and ran "manycam" (www.manycam.com). Yahoo detected this virtual webcam immediately.
2/. - while manycam was running, I went to the "preferences" of yahoo and there -- Camera Settings
--- choice was: avermedia capture (gave black screen)
: manycam virtual webcam (works ok)
: USB video ! Selcted this one, an lo, webam worked fine, even after exit/restart of yahoo 9.

After this, the webcam also worked fine on other softwares like "broadcaster" where it did not work previously.

I guess that once yahoo finds the right way to the webcam it remembers it and is able to straighten the way for other apps... Whatever, it now works for me.

Good luck!
