I have TX2-1025dx, Win 7 64-bit and installed the latest N-Trig driver 2.184. After experiencing months of frustrations due to phantom touches and ghost clicks problem, I finally found out all these problems were due to electromagnetic interference from an energy saving fluorescent light bulb (CFL) above my desk! I swapped out the light bulb to another brand of energy saving light bulb and my TX2 touch and pen functions are working perfectly!

Below are the details.

1. N-trig's technology is based on capacitive touch, this technology’s biggest concern is electromagnetic interference. If you hold your TX2 very close to a CFL light bulb which emits electromagnetic interference, you’ll see the cursor jumping around immediately.

2. Before I found out the source of the problem, my TX2 would work on another desk in another room, so this suggested the problem could be location related. If you experience the same problem you should try in another room with less illumination equipments around, or simply try turning off the light in the room.

3. The TX2 screen may also not working well next to big powered hi-fi speakers & subwoofers, these are electromagnetic sources.

4. I have a cellsensor EMF detection meter http://www.amazon.com/Tech-International-Cellsensor-Detection-Meter/dp/B0013P6ZJQ I used it to measure the previous CFL light bulb I had. The meter indicated it was for sure emitting electromagnetic wave far worst than the current CFL light bulb I have.

5. The Win 7 N-Trig driver is based on Multi Touch Manipulations (MTM) technology, which is supported by Win 7 OS only. Vista and XP drivers are based on Multi Touch Gestures (MTG) technology. The Vista and XP MTG drivers may work well without seeing these problems under the same environment, but this doesn’t mean MTM driver will work.

Right here I need to thanks to a good friend of mine who is the expert in touch technology, he told me the weakness of capacitive touch technology which leaded me to the discovery of the energy light bulb problem.

I also need to give credits to web resources of below:
Phantom Touches - Looks Like the Cause is Electromagnetic Interference
http://www.gottabemobile.com/forum/dell/7800-phantom-touches-looks-like-cause-electromagnetic-interference.html

http://www.gottabemobile.com/tag/n-trig-initiative

Please share your story if you could resolve the phantom touches and ghost clicks problems. If you have N-Trig driver not able to detect the TX2 screen problem, you may want to try turn off the light or move to another room for the detection process.

Good luck.

There have been a couple articles relating to that already on these forums, but it is always nice to see one so well written.

Unfortunately however, external EMI sources are not the soul cause of these ghost clicks. Users, including myself, have tested this out by using the laptop in a variety of locations. Speaking for myself, I have no speakers or florescent lights in my room, nor in my den, or deck. All of these locations experience the issue still. I have tried it with lighting on and off durring the time, no effect. I have even had ghost clicks in the middle of a massive park with nothing around for about a mile

The issue happens the most when on battery power. The 2.184 driver package causes them constantly, the 2.59 hardly has them very seldom, at least for me.

Here is an interesting idea I proposed but am still getting conformation on yet. Is the LCD screen on the Tx2's LED or florescent... If flourescent, then that would support the EMI argument completely, however that leads to another issue, who is at fault then for horrible planning for these units, NTRIG or HP...

This isn't a solution is it? I feel quite upset now. I realised my lamp made it worse during the time of win7 rc, and people over at tabletpcreview confirmed it. I'm quite surprised you just realised it. (someone even suggested foiling up the magnet on the left side of the screen; you can find it with a coin). But please don't burst people's bubbles like that...

He's not trying to burst your bubble on purpose, this is *A* solution to one of the causes, not all of the causes, so it may help some folks, but not all of them.

I will step in here to say that MiDiMaN888 is just the messenger here, and has offered a very well written article for one of the sources of the ghost clicks. He didn't say this solved it for everyone, just himself and wanted feedback on it from others to see if it helped them.

Please do not berate him for posting his findings as he is trying to help everyone out. His findings are a very valid source of some of the issues, and it very well may be the majority of the issue if the Tx2 uses a fluorescent backlight for its LCD screen as this would emit EMI.
On a side note I do think that the driver/FM package for this is very weak and beta quality at best judging by the wide variances in issues between the two win7 drivers currently. We will see what NTrig does with the next release which is purported to be soon.

HP documentation does not match up compleatly which is why I was questioning it.  The 1300 series lists LCD screens in its description specs, but the 1000 lists LCD and non LCD as well which was odd.

Product Name tx2-1025dx
Display 12.1" Diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Integrated Touch-screen, Convertible Display (1280 x 800). Panel rotates 180 degrees and folds flat. Rechargeable Digitizer for handwriting capture included.

Also included next to the LCD are the speakers, WLAN antenna, bluetooth, etc.  Unsure if RF frequencies of WIFI/Bluetooth have similar effects as the EMI from speakers/flourscent lights though.

Regardless of whatever the source is though, it would be nice if it was fixed.  Really annoying dealing with it as it always wants to do it when I am showing the laptop off to someone..Embarassed

Cyrenes, I am not saying this is not Ntrigs fault. I clearly state here and in other threads we have talked in regarding Ntrig that I believe this is an NTrig issue with poor driver/firmware and probably poor sheilding in thier hardware if trace EMI and other everyday interferance can cause these issues. I am just looking for possible reasons the issue is existing and what effects it more.

Please stop being combative with people who are working to help and learn/understand more about this. We know N-trig is at fault, and with lack of support from them we are trying to find ways to at least alleviate some of the issues...

Wow....what DID I miss? LOL!!!^^^^^^

I doubt that they would have made these without checking for interference from other EMI sources...

Funny problem I've been experiencing lately, touch continues to work while it is turned off, in the control panel and everything. Only a reboot fixes it.

April 4, 2010 3:20 PM

I downloaded the latest drivers 2.239A, and ever since i've been getting ghost clicks like crazy, its driving me nuts. I get them quickly and consecutively. I had this problem before, but it was very rare. I've tried recalibrating, rebooting, and even reinstalling the drivers.

The clicks aren't limited to one spot either, the clicks appear all over the screen, to the point where i cant even use my properly.
