I would think that a 2nd battery for the bay would be far more useful then replacing it with another hard drive. They're pretty much right on the money that it'd be a pain and a lot of work for very little actual gain since a 2nd HD would also drain the battery faster.

matter of opinion for many, they both have their own particular benefits but in the grand scheme of things more would boast the battery over the drive itself. I personally have my own reasons for wanting the drive and have no concerns about the wear in battery, I keep mine charging at home as well as in my car while driving(Power Inverter). This caddy could be the thing I'm looking for, if its even made...yet

Revised post:

HERE! Use this adapter!
http://cgi.ebay.com/SATA-2nd-Hard-Disk-Drive-HDD-caddy-adapter-HP-tx2000_W0QQ...

I have tested this with a standard 160gb HP drive. And it works! Silently to!!!

One note: you have to loose your DVD drive function because you have to remove the adapter board off the back of your unit.
But you have 2 options:

A: buy this adapter, and then use your old DVD drive as additional USB drive
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140376969514&ssPageName=ST...

B: if your anal like me and want a hot swap dvd drive.... Find a broken tx**** drive, call hp "my dvd drive wont work" they will ship you a new one, ship the broken one back. Now you have 2 boards so you can have a working DVD and 2nd hdd bay... also, buy the above mentioned adapter...and you have a 2nd slim dvd drive....

Hey thats neat.......I may just do that....slap a SSD on there and have a great 2nd HDD that will NOT drain the battery much whatsoever.

or you could go crazy.... and put like 1.5 tb of storage in your tx2.....

My original thought for this though is I'm in high school, and I want a redundant back up to the external hdd so if mine fails.... TADA! swap the drives and boom back up and running....

*by external I mean... 2nd

thank you this is what I was looking for..and I choose option "B" FTW. when you tested this did the drive show as a secondary internal or just another external that you have to 'Safely Remove" prior to disconnecting?

Now b will only work if you are still under warrenty. And im not quite sure but im 95% sure it just shows up as a seccond drive (not-removeable).

Oh and to add: when you remove the tx2 front bezel (you will want to put it on the adapter beleive me). You will need a little craftyness to get it on. you have to bend the connectors on the back of the bezel off, then tape it to the adapter and put a little superglue to let set.

FYI the "Safely Remove" function is settable on any drive with a letter, it's a matter of the write cache being enabled in Disk Management.

I didn't realize it was so easy to mod yourself. I've got an old TX1000 that I think uses the same bay/interface, and I could sacrifice the board off it's DVD drive and use the weight saver (plus some dremel and glue,) to build up a compactflash reader.

March 23, 2010 6:13 PM

NO! the tx1000 boards will not work. I bought one that worked (dvd drive) pluged it and it causes non boot and hangs. Tried that.... thats why I said file a warranty claim....

I just bought an older TX2000 drive off Ebay and one of the aforementioned adapters. If anybody else is considering a DIY, it won't be an easy one, as the slimline SATA CD connector is not the same as a standard SATA connector (which 2.5" drives use.) It has a smaller power connector, and is on the extreme edge of the drive, making alignment impossible even if the connector did fit.
The seller of the adapters accepted my offer of $40 btw.

hang on one seccond: what exactly are you saying:

A: the hard drive is not fitting in the CD Drive holder.

B: the cd drive holder locations do not match up with the ones inside the latpop?

C: other

Im asking because mines as simple, take the adapter plate off the purchased cd drive, put it on the back of the CD drive holder, and then slide the hard drive in the holder and side the drive/holder in.

C:..
Sorry, I guess I should have been clearer about DIY. I meant trying to hack something together yourself rather than buy the $40ish ebay adapter. With the board from the DVD drive and the ebay adapter mine works fine as well.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhh alright :) Sorry for my mis understanding!
